Kick Off Meeting Report Preparing the basis for an inventory of Marine Important Bird Areas along the southern Black Sea Coast, 5 July 2012, Elite World Hotel, İstanbul, TURKEY 1. Introduction The Kick-Off Meeting and Press Conference of the Black Sea Seabirds Project was held on the 5 th of June 2012, at Elite World Hotel, İstanbul, TURKEY. 48 participants attended the Kick Off Meeting, including the Director of Doğa Derneği, Conservation Managers and staff of SOR, BSPB and SOR, a representative of Black Sea Commission, Country Programme Officer of the RSPB, representatives from Ministry Of Forestry and Water Affairs and Ministry of Environment and Urbanism, NGO coworkers and academicians.
2. Opening Session Welcome Remarks by Engin Yılmaz, Director, Doğa Derneği As the organizer of the meeting, Mr. Engin Yılmaz, Director of Doğa Derneği, opened the meeting, welcomed the participants and thanked all the attendees for their attention and participation. He also thanked project partners and EU for their unsparing support and cooperation for the project. Mr. Yılmaz said that This project is a great chance for the Black Sea s future and we want the regions extending from the Marmara to Aegean Sea to be protected. He further remarked that The Southern Black Sea coasts holds internationally important populations of Yelkouan Shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan), and the Mediterranean sub-species of the European Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii). Yelkouan Shearwater has recently been upgraded on the IUCN Red List to vulnerable. He underlined that Black Sea Seabirds project aims to train staff and volunteers from Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey on seabird research and conservation methods. Fieldwork will be undertaken to identify key feeding and rafting areas for Yelkouan Shearwaters. All the Shag colonies in Turkey and Bulgaria will be surveyed and the Marine Important Bird Areas around the most important colonies will be mapped and characterized according to the established Marine IBA methods and criteria. Training on methods to identify Marine IBAs and on designating Marine SPAs will also be given. 3. Presentations Mr. Jose Tavares (Country Programme Officer,RSPB) Mr. Tavares presented an overview of the current situation of Marine Important Bird Areas and Seabirds in Europe. Ms. Valeria Abaza (Pollution Monitoring and Assessment Officer,Black Sea Commission) Ms. Abaza presented the current situation wıth respect to pollution in the Black Sea. She also informed the participants about actions agreed upon under the Bucharest Convention to reduce nutrient pollution in the Black Sea.
Mr. Süreyya İsfendiyaroğlu (Conservation Manager, Doğa Derneği) Mr. İsfendiyaroglu presented the framework for the project implementation, in-kind contributions by the project partners, roles and responsibilities of major project stakeholders, the performance indicators, administrative guidelines and project reporting system. He stressed the roles and responsibilities of HOS, SOR and BSPB in the implementation of the project, in particular, the timely preparation and submission of progress report to EU and to maximize the outcomes of the project. Presentations by partner organizations; Mr. Stoycho Stoychev-Conservation Manager of BSPB Mr. Ciprian Fantana-Conservation Manager of SOR Mr. Thanos Kastritis-Conservation Manager of HOS Each Conservation manager of the partner organizations had 15 minutes to introduce their organizations including their mission, priorities, specific working fields, methodologies, success stories and their role in Black Sea Project. 4. Closing and Wrap-up All participants expressed appreciation towards Doğa Derneği for its excellent hospitality, meeting arrangements and professional expertise. Mr. Hayri Dağlı, Project Manager expressed his appreciation for the fruitful outcomes of the meeting and the contribution of partner organisations through their active involvement during the meeting. Conservation managers of the partner organizations thanked all for the successful completion of the meeting and expressed their utmost endeavor for the project.
