Methods to collect fisheries socioeconomic data
TÜİK: Face to face interviews with fishers in marine capture fisheries between January-May, in 28 coastal cities TÜİK: Aquaculture and inland fisheries data are provided by MoFAL

Fisheries Information System
Logbook The logbook being used since 2007 is compliance with the European Union s respective legislation (EEC) 2807/83
Application of logbook in Turkey Since end of 2008, the logbook data has been recorded in FIS Fishing vessels over 12 meters are under legal obligation to keep logbook and complete a landing declaration (Totally: 1 665 vessels)
Data entry Logbook data is entered in the system under 4 items: Vessel data Navigation data Fishing gear data Data on transfer vessel
Data entry Data of fishing date, number of operations, fishing area, species caught, quantity of catch, are entered at this section. In the system, fishing area can be specified as geographical coordinate
What type of socio-economic data are collected in fisheries?
Gender (since 2012) Number of fishers (vessel owner) Number of fishers (crew) Number of crews (family member) Number of fishing gears by region Age of fishers Price Fishing vessel licences by region and by city Fishing costs* Catch quantity Import-export value and quantity Investment for fishing Marketing channels
Fishing income Marital status Education level Number of fishing dependent family members Income other than fishing Fishing experience Number of fishers who is member of a cooperative
Are they sufficient for socio-economic monitoring of the fisheries sector?
Economic performance of fishing fleet In Europe: «Economic performance of selected European fishing fleets. Promotion of common methods for economic assessment of EU fisheries. Annual Report» In Turkey: Only some specific or local studies
Economic performance indicators Net profit Gross profit Gross value added Net profit/revenue Net profit/invested capital Catch value Employment on board Crew share/salary Days at the sea
GFCM Task 1.3. Economic variables
http://www.gfcmonline.org/data/reporting/
Suggestions to decision makers for socioeconomic monitoring of fisheries Fishers -Fishermen -Fisherwomen Fleet Owner or crew; fishing income, salary, job satisfaction etc. -Large-scale; trawlers, purse seiners Profit -Small-scale; gillnetters, longliners etc. GFCM Task 1.3 CPUE, VPUE Recreational The most caught speices, number of fisheries anglers by fishing modality, number of fishing operations, costs etc. Region GSA or Regional seas GFCM:SAC14/2012/Inf.7
What is next? Decide the data to be collected and consider following criteria: -The best available -Minimum required -The easiest to get -The most reliable -Suitable for multipurpose use Decide indicators to be calculated (Depends on the data decided)
Management costs / Landing value We should also know the management costs! Research costs Enforcement costs Management costs
It is time to collect proper/ly socioeconomic data for Turkish fisheries! Methods to gather fisheries data should be applicable in Turkish fisheries context! Should be cost-effective! Should be practical! Should be tested through case studies!
My data collection. Thanks
