EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN UNIVERSITY CRITERIA for AWARDING HONORARY DOCTORATE DEGREES Aim 1. Eastern Mediterranean University selectively and judiciously awards honorary doctorate degrees to distinguished scholars, scientists, business people, creative artists, public leaders, and humanitarians whose accomplishments have meaningfully served humankind. Professional associations that are created by the process of awarding of an honorary degree are a means of aiding the University s community in setting and achieving its mission. Rationale and Criteria 2. Eastern Mediterranean University awards honorary doctorate degrees principally to individuals who have distinguished themselves in sustained scholarly activity in the arts, letters, science, technology, or service to humanity and his/her country. An honorary doctorate also may be awarded to an individual from industry, government, communications, or another public arena who has distinguished himself or herself through nationally or internationally significant contributions. Restrictions 3. a) Honorary doctorates recognize an individual, not an office or position. So far as possible, there will be an effort to ensure that the persons honored represent a variety of fields of endeavor. No more than two honorary degrees will be approved in any one academic year. Normally, honorary degrees will be awarded at the graduation ceremonies. b) Honorary doctorates are not awarded: - in absentia - posthumously - to current employees of the University Formation of The Committee on Honorary Degrees 4. a) Faculties, recommend to the Senate their full-time candidates with distinguished records of scholarship as nominees for The Committee on Honorary Degrees. The senate appoints The Committee on Honorary Degrees which consists of seven faculty members each being from different faculties. Committee members are appointed by the Senate decision for a three year term at the beginning of the academic year. b) Vice rector in charge of academic affairs or his/her representative serves as an ex officio, non-voting member of the committee. c) Committee appoints one of the voting members to serve as Chair of the Committee and presents to the approval of the rector. Procedures for Nominations 5. a) Nominations are submitted by resolution of the faculty or a departmental unit of the University to the Chair of the
and Approval Committee on Honorary Degrees. Nominations must be received within the first half of the academic term preceding that in which the degree is to be awarded; any exception to this procedure requires approval of at least five voting members of the Committee. b) A completed nomination packet consist of eight copies of the following: a EMU nomination form for Honorary Doctorate Degrees, a letter of support from the appropriate academic unit, and the nominee's full curriculum vitae. c) The committee reviews the nominees and the supporting documents and selects nominees for further consideration by the Senate. d) Nominations for recipients of Honorary Degrees shall be submitted for approval by the Senate in an executive session at least 40 days prior to the convocation for graduates at which the degree is to be awarded. e) The senate selects two of the nominees. f) The Rector presents his/her choice of approved nominee, through to the EMU Board of Trustees. g) Honorary doctorate degrees are awarded only to those nominees approved by the Committee on Honorary Degrees, the Senate, the Rector, and the EMU Board of Trustees. The names, upon their approval, are made public prior to the graduation ceremony. h) Five years from the adoption of this rule the Senate and the Rector's Office jointly reviews the list of recipients of honorary doctorates, and the functioning of the selection and approval process, to determine whether the practice of awarding honorary doctorates at EMU shall continue.
