To enrich the students with professional, skills, to ensure their, acknowledgement of applied, knowledge and skills within the, professional framework of theory and, practice. To introduce the concepts, and methods of scale and, measurement; to provide knowledge, on projection methods for designing, and on symbols, shading and drawing, for urban planning. To familiarize the, student with coded resolutions of land, and about (technical and perspective), sectional aspect. Dr. İnci Olgun PLN 105 HISTORY OF HUMAN SETTLEMENTS Objective / Contents: The aim of the course is to understand the social and economic structuring of human settlements throughout the history, from hunter-gatherer communities to 21st century cities. The base of the course is to understand the relation between the cities and the civilizations. It is important to understand and discuss the causality of the certain types of human settlements and the civilization that creates them. Understanding the types of settlements in each historical age makes it possible to understand the social organization, scientific and technologic development and culture behind them with major breaking points in the human history. Another aim of the course is to give students the capacity to understand to contemporary settlements on a historical background. Assessment Methods: All students are responsible for a mid-term and an end-term exam. Mid-term exam constitutes 30% and end-term exam constitutes 70% of the final grade. 6 3RD SEMESTER REQUIRED COURSES PLN 201 PLANNING STUDIO 2 8 Hrs/Week, Theory + Studio, 9 ECTS Credits Objective / Contents: Planning Studio II-III where the students meet practical issues of planning for the first time plays an important role. As development paradigm and welfare state which are the starting point of traditional planning- leave their place to globalisation process urban planning have to redefine its methodology and contents. In this changing context the planner profile who is working as a technician for public and who must solve the conflict of public and private interest have to change and redefine. In the context of public-society conflict that is examined starting from the reality of public (state) interest can be against society the relation between public and private interest must be reexamined and society interest must be highlighted. Contemporary planner has to play a role in a system which lets all parts of the society participate and interact. The planner should carry a variety of missions such as starting the process submitting the long term visions to the society guiding in order to reach the democratically defined vision creating choices via technical knowledge reconciling the groups bargaining and promoting the plan in case. In order to manage these missions team work is certainly necessary moreover students should be professionalized in some areas of education system without losing track of other issues. An education policy of this professionalizing context will make the graduates create and promote their own projects on urban parts in the restricted employment market. As development paradigm and welfare state which are the starting point of traditional planning- leave their place to globalisation process urban planning have to redefine its methodology and contents. In this changing context the planner profile who is working as a technician for public and who must solve the conflict of public and private interest have to change and redefine. In the context of public-society conflict that is examined starting from the reality of public (state) interest can be against society the relation between public and private interest must be reexamined and society interest must be highlighted. Prof. Dr. Kevser ÜSTÜNDAĞ PLN 341 URBAN HISTORY I Objective / Contents: Major aim of the course is to offer students a general encounter about the urban and planning history of Anatolia and Turkey through ages, phenomenons and discourses which represent one of unique and colourfull experiences throughout the world. The course has a multidisciplinary approach. Therefore experts from various disciplines such as archaeology, geology, history etc. contribute to the content. It is intended that students will at the end gain a general level of knowledge about urban and planning history of a country with a cultural heritage so rich and so deep and with an urban panorama so plentiful and with different experiences gathered and layered. Assessment Methods: The course is theoretical. Active participation and contribution of students is always encouraged. Some courses will be held in site visits. Therefore site visits is a part of the course schedule. Students are required to prepare an article and/or an essay for mid-term and have to participate to a final examination.
