Kobra her şeyden önce farklı ülkelerden, farklı kültürlerden gelen sanatçıların hareketiydi. Bakış açıları globaldi; hangi coğrafyaya ya da hangi kültüre ait olursa Kobra Özgür Sanatın 1000 Günü Foreword Cobra was the name of an important international avant-garde movement of European artists. The group was founded in Paris, in 1948. Cobra is an acronym, formed from the three capital cities where the founders lived and worked: Copenhagen (Denmark), Brussels (Belgium) and Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The members were young and had the ambition of creating a free and direct form of art. They wanted art to embrace people instead of excluding them. The artists believed in a new folk art, for and by everyone. The Cobra artists, who originated from several European countries, were united in their goal to establish a direct and spontaneous expression. They were inspired by a multi-facetted primitivism, exemplified by the creative outpourings of children, primitive art forms, folk art, non-western and tribal art, and Scandinavian art dating from the Middle Ages and prehistoric times. Cobra s official existence was relatively short-lived, lasting from November 1948 until November 1951. However, the period spanning a little over 1000 days saw the birth of a free form of art. A synergy existed between the members of the group, which expressed itself in a distinctively childlike and spontaneous style, as well as a range of theoretical ideas that were to be of profound importance to the development of modern art in post-war Europe. 2). Esin kaynakları çocukların ve akıl hastalarının yaratıcı dışavurumlarıyla örneklenebilen çok yönlü primitivizm, primitif sanat formları, halk sanatı, Batı dışı sanat, kabile sanatı, tarih öncesi ve ortaçağın primitif Kobra Özgür Sanatın 1000 Günü 1 Hollanda Deneysel Grubu nun yayınladığı Reflex dergisinin kapağı. Cover Reflex magazine of the Experimental Group in Holland. 1 Cobra 1000 Days of Free and Spontaneous Art A painting is not a structure of colours and lines, but an animal, a night, a cry, a man, or all of these together. 1 This oft-quoted statement comes from the Dutch artist Constant Nieuwenhuys, one of the founding members of Cobra. Cobra, which was established in Paris in 1948, was an international movement of artists from various European countries. The name of the group was formed as an acronym of the three capital cities where the founding members lived and worked: Copenhagen (Denmark), Brussels (Belgium) and Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The movement s members were young avant-garde artists with the ambition of initiating a new and free form of art. Constant s quote appears in the manifesto that he published in the first edition of Reflex (fig. 1), the magazine distributed by the Experimental Group in Holland from 1948 onwards. The Experimental Group was an alliance of progressive Dutch artists, which had been established in the summer of that year. The members of the group would later join forces with the international Cobra movement. Constant s manifesto consisted of a passionate plea for a new, free and expressive form of art that was directly rooted in life itself and based upon experience, or, more specifically, the release of the innate artistic creativity that is concealed within each and every individual being. Çocuksu ve spontan The Cobra artists, who originated from different European countries, were united in their struggle towards direct and spontaneous expression (fig. 2). They were inspired by a multi-facetted primitivism exemplified by the creative outpourings of children and mentally ill people, primitive art forms, folk art, non-western and tribal art and primitive forms of Scandinavian art from the Middle Ages and prehistoric times. 2 In a very short period of time Cobra only existed for three years, from 1948 until 1951 the members of this international group created a synergy that resulted in a pronouncedly childlike and spontaneous style, as well as a range of theoretical ideas that were to be of profound importance to the development of art in Europe after 1945. Cobra has not lost any of its value or relevance today, more than sixty years after the group s official founding in Paris in 1948 (fig. 3). Although the period of its inception and the initial response were tumultuous the artists received mostly negative criticism during the forties and fifties as a result of their highly imaginative work Cobra has since been inducted into the art-historical canon of the twentieth century. Indeed, there has even been a recent upsurge of interest. The substantial travelling exhibition Klee and Cobra: A Child s Play (2011-2012), for example, attracted more than 250,000 visitors, while the Guggenheim Museum in New York is devoting a new presentation from its permanent collection to Cobra, Tachisme and Art Informel during the summer of 2012, and works by Cobra artists have recently been breaking auction records on the international market. 3 Cobra 1000 Days of Free Art 17

üslupları, çok yönlü primitivizmleri ve manifestolarında fark edilen Marksist etki, hepsi, Sandberg in değişen bir toplumda sanatın oynaması gereken rol konusundaki görüşlerine tıpa tıp uyuyordu. Bu ve açık açık belirttiği Stedelijk Müzesi ni çağdaş sanatın yuvasına dönüştürme arzusu, Sandberg in 1949 da genç sanatçılara, ayrıca Hollandalı şairler Jan G. Elburg, Lucebert, Gerrit Kouwenaar ve Bert Schierbeek e, mimar Aldo van Eyck ın gözetiminde tam bir özgürlük tanımasına neden oldu (res. 6). Kobra Özgür Sanatın 1000 Günü The group exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam The first group exhibition after the foundation of Cobra was held in 1949. This took place at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (fig. 4). 4 Willem Sandberg, who became director of the Stedelijk Museum in 1945, recognised the new spirit of the age in the works of Karel Appel, Eugène Brands, Constant, Corneille and the foreign artists, including Asger Jorn. Their childlike and spontaneous style, multi-facetted primitivism and the Marxist influence on their manifestos all perfectly matched his own views about the role that art should play in a changing society. This, along with Sandberg s explicit desire to transform the Stedelijk Museum into a home for contemporary art, encouraged him to give the young artists free rein in 1949, along with the Dutch poets Jan G. Elburg, Lucebert, Gerrit Kouwenaar and Bert Schierbeek and under the supervision of the architect Aldo van Eyck (fig. 6). This venture resulted in the Exposition Internationale d Art Expérimental, an exhibition that has attained an almost mythical stature. The art of the experimentalists was received extremely negatively in the conservative, post-war Netherlands. The press passed extraordinarily hard judgement on Cobra: Scribblers, Daubers, Cheaters ; The lunacy of this world ; Humbug and deception these are but a few quotations from the written reviews that appeared in the daily and weekly Dutch press at the end of 1949. What possessed the members of Cobra that they should choose to go against the tide by producing highly imaginative and colourful art? In 1949, art critics were Cobra 1000 Days of Free Art 19
Cobra 1000 Days of Free Art Kobra Özgür Sanatın 1000 Günü Danimarka avangardı Danimarkalılar, Kobra nın kuruluşuyla sonuçlanacak olan sanatsal gelişmelerde başrolü oynayanlar arasındaydı. Bu tarihten sonra Danimarkalıların fikirleri ve çalışma yöntemleri Belçikalı ve at a loss as to how this could be explained. One of their number concluded that the artists must have been stricken by the times. 5 After 1945, Europe was in the throes of a turbulent era, economically, politically and socially. During the post-war period of reconstruction, many countries and societies went through seismic shifts. The members of Cobra were strongly influenced by their times. Therefore, Cobra could be seen as the embodiment of a collective criticism of Western society and the shared ambition to make a radical departure from existing artistic movements. Danish avant-garde The Danes were among the frontrunners when it came to the artistic developments that were to result in the foundation of Cobra. A new generation of young and progressive artists had arisen during the early thirties of the last century. Egill Jacobsen, Ejler Bille, Asger Jorn, Else Alfelt, Sonja Ferlov and Carl- Henning Pedersen were among those united in their quest for a new abstractexpressionist visual language. An explanation for this pioneering role on the part of the Danes can be found in their focus on Europe. In the thirties, the country had been geared towards international cooperation, both in the field of socioeconomic affairs and in the arts. The artists drive for innovation was partly fuelled by their strong political engagement, which took the form of the socialist ideal of the classless society. 20

Cobra 1000 Days of Free Art Kobra Özgür Sanatın 1000 Günü Hollandalı genç sanatçılarda belirli bir sempati uyandırmaya başladı. 11). Dotremont un iddiası Hollanda daki Constant ile sanatçı dostları Appel ve Corneille in düşüncelerine denk düşmüştü. 1940 larda Hollanda nın sanat ortamı Danimarka nın tersine pek de yeniliğe açık değildi. Sanat akademilerindeki eğitim çok geleneksel ve tutucuydu. Avrupa nın 1945 te kurtuluşundan sonra Eugène Brands, Anton Rooskens, Jan Nieuwenhuijs (Constant ın kardeşi) ve Theo Members of the Danish avant-garde travelled to Paris to meet Hans Arp, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Ernst and Joan Miró. In 1937, the Danish art association Linien organised a group exhibition of their own art together with work by international avant-garde artists including Paul Klee. Within a short period of six or seven years, the melting-pot of international influences, including Surrealism and the psychological theories of Freud and others, and the national tradition of folk-art and Scandinavian myths had led to the development of a new visual language. The foundation of Cobra After the artistic isolation between 1940 and 1945 that had been caused by the Second World War, the ideas and working methods of the Danes began to strike a sympathetic chord with the younger Belgian and Dutch artists. They met each other in November 1948 during the Surrealist s international gathering in Paris. The Belgian poet and thinker Christian Dotremont also attended the event (fig. 9-10). Dotremont, who is seen as the spiritual father of Cobra, had for a number of years been working on an ambitious programme. He was convinced of the potential of experimental art to realise far-reaching political and social change, partly as a result of the influence of the Marxist thinking of the French philosopher Henri Lefebvre. Dotremont, who was dissatisfied with the overly intellectualised and dogmatic stance of the Surrealists, took the opportunity during the Paris gathering to set up an 22

Yukarıda sözü edilen sanatçıların yanında yer alan en önemli isimler Pierre Alechinsky, Else Alfelt, Jean-Michel Atlan, Pol Bury, Georges Collignon, Jacques Doucet, Karl Otto Götz, William Gear, Stephen Gilbert, Reinhoud d Haese, Heny Heerup, CO Hulten, Joseph Istler, Egill Jacobsen, Shinkichi Tajiri, Erik Ortvad, Anders Österlin, Carl-Henning Pedersen ve Raoul Ubac idi. Kobra Özgür Sanatın 1000 Günü Kobra nın dağılışı Kobra bayrağı altındaki uluslararası faaliyetler, hareketin başlangıçtaki çekiciliğine rağmen, 1950 lerden itibaren azalmaya başladı. Bu durum bir yandan sanatçıların kişisel yaşamlarındaki gelişmelerle, diğer yandan da her üyenin, karşılıklı etkileşim ve sinerjinin cesaretlendirmesiyle yavaş yavaş kendi farklı yollarına yönelmeleriyle association, which amounted to a regrouping of existing avant-garde initiatives in Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Once the poet Joseph Noiret, Asger Jorn, Appel, Constant and Corneille had all signed a written statement, Cobra was born. The naming of the new group led to an entertaining correspondence between Dotremont and his fellow-theorist Jorn. The former, for personal reasons, had a strong preference for the woman s name Isabelle. 6 In the end, the name CoBrA (Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam) was chosen. The connotation with the ancient symbol of the snake is highly appropriate (fig. 11). Dotremont s ambitions were attuned to the ideas of Constant and his artist friends Appel and Corneille in the Netherlands. During the forties, the Dutch artistic climate was, in contrast to that of Denmark, not especially open to innovation. The teaching at the art academies was very traditional and conservative. After the 1945 liberation, things began to stir among a number of young artists including Eugène Brands, Anton Rooskens, Jan Nieuwenhuijs, brother of Constant, and Theo Wolvecamp. In 1948 they joined forces with Constant, Appel and Corneille to become the Experimental Group in Holland (fig 2-12). On behalf of the group, Constant distanced himself from all the -isms and movements in the world of art in a manifesto that was published in the magazine Reflex, quoted above. Surrealism was going down under the weight of its own intellectualism, Naturalism had become the beauty ideal of the bourgeoisie and geometrical abstraction was sterile. Constant proposed an alternative form of folk-art, based on expression, spontaneity and the subconscious. 7 Cobra 1000 Days of Free Art 25
