I N V I T A T I O N Invitation from Sabanci University, Center for Individual and Academic Development [CIAD] Writing Center L E T T E R Sabancı Üniversitesi, Bireysel ve Akademik Gelisim Merkezi [BAGEM] Yazma Becerileri Merkezi nden Davet Dear Colleagues, Sabanci University Writing Center starts a series of seminars on Writing and Writing Center Issues, the first one being the End-of-Summer Institute 2011: Role and Implementation of Writing Programs and Writing Centers in Secondary and Higher Education The seminars to follow will each focus on a specific area of writing, upon need and interest. Please review our Institute Program in English for English Language Teaching [ELT] educators September 5-8, 2011 and the Institute Program in Turkish for Turkish Language and Literature [TLL] educators, as well as colleagues involved in other courses or disciplines in Secondary and Higher Education September 9-11, 2011 and join us to share our experiences, aspirations, expectations, satisfactions, and even concerns. Sayın Meslektaslar, Sabancı Universitesi Yazma Becerileri Merkezi, Orta ve Yüksek Öğretimde Yazma Becerilerinin Geliştirilmesi ve Yazma Becerileri Merkezleri konulu bir seminerler dizisi başlatıyor. Bu seminerlerin ilki, 2011 YAZ SONU SEMĐNERĐ: Yazma Programlarının ve Yazma Becerileri Merkezlerinin Orta ve Yüksek Öğretimdeki Rolü Yazma nın farklı yönlerinin ele alınacağı daha sonraki seminerlerin konuları, ihtiyaçlara ve isteklere göre belirlenecektir. 5-8 Eylul 2011 de Orta ve Yüksek Öğretimde Đngilizce Dil eğitmenlerine yönelik Đngilizce gerçekleşecek programımızı ve 9-11 Eylul 2011 de Orta ve Yüksek Öğretimde, gerek Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı eğitmenlerine, gerekse Sosyal ve Fen ağırlıklı diğer ders veya disiplinlerin eğitmenlerine yönelik Türkçe gerçekleşecek programımızı incelemenizi rica ediyor; deneyimlerimizi, özlemlerimizi, beklentilerimizi, memnuniyet ve gereğinde kaygılarımızı paylaşıp, çözümler üretebileceğimiz Đngilizce veya Türkçe Seminer Programlarından birine katılmaya sizleri davet ediyoruz. 2

S E M I N A R O U T L I N E The End-of- Summer Institute between Sep. 5 and11, 2011, both in English for 4 days and in Turkish for 3 days was planned as a refresher seminar of methodologies and pedagogies of writing as implemented in international writing centers, with close focus on SU Writing Center s rationale and practice for 11 years as a model. The message was meant to be If we could make it work, you CAN, too; and much earlier in Secondary Education as a must for the self development of youngsters and a societal development for intellectual literacy and better self expression. This aim was achieved with actively attending 35 participants in the English and 71 participants in the Turkish Programs through 5 SUWC members and 2 Turkish Language & Literature instructors presentations, whole group discussions, the Special Interest Groups [SIGs], our 2 TAs, and Help Desk s input in the hours 09:00-17:00. The SIGs within the program layout, reinforced with video recording Open Microphone and the You Chair presentations of the participants on the last day, were new for Turkey though found very instrumental as interaction at international platforms. The English Program participants had these group involvements very smoothly and effectively, though the Turkish Program participants had more favorism for the individual presentation formats. The reflective paragraphs that all English Program participants wrote at the end of the Institute, as well as their brief presentations at the closing session supported our belief that the Institute helped and the continuation, maybe shorter than 4 days and at our Karakoy Center, was needed. The two guest High School students resumes at the end of the Turkish Seminar, right from mid Anatolia, were proof that our messages were clearly taken at the end of the Turkish Institute. Now, an electronic discussion will start on the most demanded topic for Institute 2012 on the Institute Website that will also indicate the significance of networking.
