Folder 1 contains 5 listening activities (there are audio and video files) for the week, and folder 2 contains transcriptions and handouts of all listening files for the week. including further reading material, tip for the week, phrase to impress, vocabulary, useful web sites and a test to hand in to your tutor. Please print folder 2 and have it with you while listening to your files. This page will summarize and match the activities. HOW TO USE THE PACK - Every week, you will complete a Flexi-Pack which contains a variety of activities. - Download matching PDP and MP3 file and take with you to listen "on the go". Q,W,X do not appear, but there are six new letters. Ç,Ğ,I,Ş,Ö,Ü. The dotted letters are each added immediately after the corresponding undotted letter. The spoken way of the letters are: for vowels: the sound of the vowel and for consonants: followed by a letter e?

"come in" when there is knock at the door 4. go ahead to give way to someone has several meanings: 1. indicates respect: like "(peki) efendim" instead of Sir/madame 2. I beg your pardon? 3. answering when your name is called or answering the telephone instead of yes 4. when you do not understand something, instead of "what" See you later! 8 General Information about the language Turkish belongs to Ural-Altaic group of languages. With a few exceptions the main features which distinguish Ural-Altaic languages from the Indo- European languages are 1. Agglutination 2. Vowel Harmony 3. Non-existence of gender 4. Adjectives precede nouns 5. Verbs always at the end of sentences WORD ORDER RULES 1-Subject comes first it is followed by expression(s) of time next come expresion(s) of place and the last items are the personal and main object(s) which are followed at the very end by the verb 2- Modifiers appear before whatever they modify (Therefore, adjectives as well as participles and qualifying nouns precede nouns)

9 GRAMMAR VOWEL HARMONY When you are adding a suffix to a word, the suffix has to harmonise with the word you are adding it to. There are two types of suffixes: -E TYPE (The suffix contains a or e) - I TYPE (The suffix contains ı,i,u or ü ) and there are two type of vowels: Front vowels Back vowels E İ A I Ö Ü O U Example: PLURALS: To make a noun plural you add either -lar or -ler in Turkish The noun does not take the plural ending when there is a numeral or a quantifier before it! How will you decide which one you are going to add? A word: adam=man You want to say: men You should add -lar or -ler to adam. The last vowel in the base is: a, this is a e type suffix, so you choose a= adamlar

12 GRAMMAR Demonstratives There are three Demonstratives in Turkish BU= this ŞU= that/this (1-is generally accompanied with a gesture towards the thing referred to or 2-is sometimes used to refer to something that will be mentioned.) O = that Plural: BUNLAR = these ŞUNLAR = those/these ONLAR = those *Demonstratives can be either Adjectives (qualify a noun) OR Pronouns ( in place of a noun) and are used just like the English demonstratives. ex. Bu kadın evli. Bu soğuk. *As pronouns the demonstratives can take plural ending and n will be added to the base. When used as an adjective if the noun they qualify is plural they do not change. ex. Şu kadınlar evli Şunlar ucuz Interrogatives Ne? means "what" Kim? means "who" Nasıl? means "how"
