DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT COURSES 2017-2018 3RD SEMESTER REQUIRED COURSES PLN 201 PLANNING STUDIO 2 8 Hrs/Week, Theory + Studio, 9 ECTS Credits Objective / Contents: Planning Studio II-III where the students meet practical issues of planning for the first time plays an important role. As development paradigm and welfare state which are the starting point of traditional planning- leave their place to globalisation process urban planning have to redefine its methodology and contents. In this changing context the planner profile who is working as a technician for public and who must solve the conflict of public and private interest have to change and redefine. In the context of public-society conflict that is examined starting from the reality of public (state) interest can be against society the relation between public and private interest must be reexamined and society interest must be highlighted. Contemporary planner has to play a role in a system which lets all parts of the society participate and interact. The planner should carry a variety of missions such as starting the process submitting the long term visions to the society guiding in order to reach the democratically defined vision creating choices via technical knowledge reconciling the groups bargaining and promoting the plan in case. In order to manage these missions team work is certainly necessary moreover students should be professionalized in some areas of education system without losing track of other issues. An education policy of this professionalizing context will make the graduates create and promote their own projects on urban parts in the restricted employment market. Prof. Dr. Levent ÖZAYDIN PLN 239E READING ISTANBUL Aim of the Course: The aim of the course is to focus one of the subjects (such as urban regeneration, high-rise buildings, public transportation projects/investments etc.) of this dynamic agenda, develop a better understanding around the selected subject with thematic readings and create an art work/design project etc. related to the city s realities, instead of using the city only as a scene of the art/design work. Istanbul is a very important laboratory for urban planning and design with its historical background, spatial characteristics and urban culture, there fore it is very inspiring for art production processes. The agenda of the Istanbul changes rapidly according to the active and international character of the city. As a result, the agenda of the professionals who works on the city have to be dynamic. Some of the important topics fall behind because of this dynamisim and replaced by other topics without enough discussions. 7

Students from Arts background will have the chance to discuss the planning topics and literature, to develop a differenet view for reading / understanding the city. All the information - discussions will give inspiration and boost the creation process. Students from Urban Planning back ground will find a chance to develop an alternative view to the city and produce design projects related to the selected theme.
