The summit that was organized for the second time this year was opened by Ahmet Gulhan Gucel, Vice General Manager of Shipping, Turkish Chamber of Shipping, and Metin Kalkavan, President of the Chamber of Shipping. The event was attended by many participants from the Turkish shipping industry and the international community. One of the interesting facts of the event was there was only one representative of only one bank as a speaker: Christian Nieswandt, Head of International Clients, HSH Nordbank AG. T ürk Denizcilik Zirvesi 2008, 25 Kas m tarihinde Four Seasons Hotel Ortaköy'de gerçeklefltirildi. Aç l fl Denizcilik Müsteflarl Deniz Ticareti Genel Müdür Yard mc s Ahmet Gülhan Gücel ve Deniz Ticaret Odas Baflkan Metin Kalkavan taraf ndan yap lan, bu y l ikincisi düzenlenen organizasyona Türk denizcilik sektöründen ve uluslararas arenadan oldukça fazla kat l m oldu. Toplant da dikkat çeken unsurlardan biri, konuflmac lar aras nda sadece bir bankac n n bulunmas oldu, o da y llard r Türkiye ile ifl yapan HSH Nordbank AG'den Uluslararas Müflteriler Baflkan Christian Nieswandt idi. 040
The theme of the summit was Turkish Shipping Industry at a Crossroads: Discovering growth in an unsteady market, and the main subject dealt with was what position the Turkish shipping industry should adopt to deal with this challenging period full of uncertainties. Other topics that were discussed during the event included how the latest situation of the market in the world shipping would lead to the Turkish shipping, and how owners could survive this distressing period. The summit also drew huge attention of the world press. Speakers put emphasis on to the bad period that lasted a decade in the shipbuilding industry due to the failure to meet the excessive demand following a boom in the demand for newbuildings some 30 years ago. It was discussed whether the supply and demand balance would cause any threats to the industry in spite of the fact that yards will be busy at full capacity for the next 10 years. 2009 WILL BE A HELL OF YEAR" Despite the efforts of Mr. Suay Umut, President, Dunya Shipping Group who was the Chairman of the first session, to keep everyone's hopes high, all the meeting was altered by the negative statements of the speakers and also the audience. The conference room was all in a pessimist mood unfortunately. One of the most important statements was made by Ms. Sadan Kaptanoglu: 2009 will be a hell of a year. It reminds me the book titled- The Longest Winter- and Mr. Metin Kalkavan stressed that world shipping wouldn't be normalized soon and warned everyone to be ready for long hard years. Mr. Suay Umut emphasized the importance of the comparison between now and then. He said, We have to look before, what we did before and where we are now. It is not a situation like happened before, it is a global crisis and now it is time for us to come together as shipowners in order to rescue our shipping industry and bring it to its previous situation." Given the scarce capital and resources, he admitted that as a young shipping community it wouldn't be easy. That is why he said, it is necessary to take support from government and banks. However, Mr. Metin Kalkavan was more hopeless and pointed out the strong Turkish banks suffer from the impacts of the financial crisis. Cash is very important in this period but we cannot find any cash he said. Claiming that nobody has any confidence to spend money, he asked from the government to bring people's confidence back. Giving more pessimist news about the situation he argued that the world will never forget 2009 and 2009 will be worse than this year, and he added, "We have just earned our reputation as a shipbuilding country just now and we have to gain it back. But also we have to be ready for long hard years!" About the confidence lost, Mr. Tugrul Tokgoz, General Manager & CEO, Geden Lines also said, The problem is lack of confidence right now. People are not buying anything now, because they think commodity will be cheaper later. But what we all need is to gain confidence back. We have to wait and see when it will come down. After that, everything will have to come back somehow. MAY BE A DEAD-END AFTER 2009 Stating that stakeholders in the maritime countries share the same challenges and therefore, it is necessary for us to work together in order to deal with them effectively, not forgetting to take into account the recent European and IMO initiatives, Prof. Ioannis Tzoannos, the Secretary-General of Mercantile Marine of the Ministry of Mercantile Marine, the Aegean and Island Policy, said Turkey has its own remarkable presence in the shipping industry with Turkish shipowners ranking high up in the global list with more than 1000 vessels of 8,5 million gross tonnage owned by them. He explained that the Baltic Dry index has made a loss after already having lost more than 90% of its previous value from mid-may of 2008. However, both Baltic Clean and Dirty Tankers indices have also decreased significantly in value. Exports from Asian countries to Europe and the USA have taken a cut as has the demand for bulk transport. Freight value has also taken a plunge due to the drop in bulk demand and the decrease in freight continues. Prices for scrap and the value of ships are also subject to the same decrease. The result of this is that a significant number of shipping companies are unable to repay their bank loans, he said. Prof. Ioannis Tzoannos continued, The shipbuilding sector is among the first to have felt the blow of the credit crunch. The recent crisis in the financial markets has found the current new building overbook at record levels. Ships delivered during the last year and those due for delivery in the next two years, may struggle to repay their loans. It should be noted that during the first nine months of 2008, bank loans to global shipping have been reduced by 30%, while 60% of the total new shipbuilding orders have yet to be financed. If bank liquidity remains unstable in the next few years, we may see a massive cancellation of orders on one hand, whereas on the other, many shipyards may be faced with a dead-end after 2009. ya fiyatlar n n daha sonra ucuzlayaca n düflünüyor. Prof. Ioannis Tzoannos flöyle devam etti: Gemi infla sektörü, kredi krizinin darbesini ilk hissedenler aras nda bulunuyor. Mali piyasalardaki bu kriz, yeni infla siparifl defterini rekor seviyede iken vurdu. Geçti imiz y l teslim edilen gemiler ve önümüzdeki 2 y l içerisinde teslim edilecek olanlar kredilerini geri ödemede güçlük yaflayabilir. Ancak flu unutulmamal d r ki, 2008'in ilk 9 ay boyunca global denizcilik flirketlerine verilen kredilerde yüzde 30 azalma söz konusu, toplam yeni infla siparifllerinin yüzde 60' da finansman bekliyor. E er banka likiditesi önümüzdeki birkaç y l içinde dengesini bulamazsa, bir yanda büyük miktarda siparifl iptallerine, di er yanda ise birçok tersanenin açmaza girdi ine flahit olabiliriz. B L NMEYENLE U RAfiMAK Bayraktar Denizcilik Grubu Yönetim Kurulu Üyesi ve CEO'su Erhan Bayraktar 2004 ile 2008 y llar aras nda Türk armatörlerin toplam 19.7 milyon dwt'e karfl l k gelen yaklafl k 340 gemi siparifli verdi ini söyledi. Bayraktar bu siparifllerin yaklafl k 3.5 milyon dwt'lik ya da yüzde 17'lik k sm n n Türk tersanelerine verilirken, kalan k sm - n n genelde Çin ve Kore tersanelerine verildi ini ifade etti. 042
DEALING WITH THE UNKNOWN Mr. Erhan Bayraktar, Board member & CEO, Bayraktar Shipping Group explained between 2004 and 2008, Turkish owners ordered approximately 340 vessels, totalling 19.7 million dwt. Around 3.5 million dwt - or about 17% - was contracted with Turkish yards, the rest being placed abroad, mostly in China and Korea but not exclusively. He said, However, about nine months ago, it became more difficult to sell such ships but owners were quite happy to operate these vessels themselves and benefited from the still high freight rates. Of course, this is no longer the case! Asserting that this recession has hit the global shipping market hard and with a suddenness that is totally unprecedented, he said, there will be a clearing out of the older vessels that have been trading beyond their time. According to Bayraktar, it started early and it will be hard but it may slow, albeit only slightly, the downward decline in rates. It should ensure a healthy fleet when the recovery comes. Bayraktar continued, I'd like to think that Turkish shipowners are cautious people and that we knew that the good times couldn't last. But the reality is that some owners are eternal optimists while others are pessimists. If we knew the good times couldn't last, we would surely have fixed some ships on longer term charters even though the resultant revenue would have been a lot less than what was achievable on the spot market a few months ago. Were we careful in choosing where to invest? I don't think so. Shipowners all over the world love to jump on bandwagons and we are no different. Take chemical tankers as an example. Some owners decided that these would be a good investment and they should have been but then all of a sudden, everyone is building chemical tankers. Compared to the iron ore, coal and crude oil trades, this is a small market and simply couldn't absorb all of the ships we were building. he argued. But being positive, still he believes that the Turkish fleet is much younger than it was and in good shape to exploit the market when it recovers. ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS IN THE MIDST OF FINANCIAL CRISIS Mr. Nicholas Fistes, Chairman, Intertanko talked firstly about developments in oil transportation, and secondly about the challenges that are an inseparable part of oil transportation. In his speech he explained that the oil and the tanker industries have gone through a period of intense growth and continued, Our world's constant thirst for oil has brought about a steady growth in primary energy consumption for over 15 years, with consumption growing faster since the year 2000 - about 2 billion tonnes of oil equivalents since 2000. The tanker fleet and tanker tonne-miles are up by two-thirds since the 1980s. Örne in kimyasal tankerlere bak n.
Saying, The bottom line is that the current financial instability and uncertainty leaves us with more questions than answers, with more 'unknowns' than 'knowns', Mr. Fistes continued, One 'known' is that the tanker fleet is growing to keep up with consumer demand. You see here projected growth, based on newbuilding orders, showing 25% growth over the next three years. Supply is clear. However set against growing tanker supply is probably the biggest 'unknown' - the level of seaborne trade in oil and oil products. Forecasts show this flattening off, but the red question marks demonstrate how difficult it is to forecast tanker demand. He emphasized that tanker scrappings have dropped dramatically over the last four years as the freight markets boomed. Scrap prices have been attractive hitting over $700 per tonne - that is around $23m for a VLCC. But even at those levels, most owners preferred to hang on to their older tankers - after all, even $40,000 a day income generates nearly $15 million a year., he stressed. However fleet growth has been restrained somewhat by a significant number of single-hulled tankers leaving the tanker fleet for conversion - many into large bulk carriers, a few into double hulled tankers. You can see here that just as scrapping hit a low point in 2005/6, conversions were really taking off, taking 5, 10 or 15m dwt a year out of the fleet. However now that the drybulk sector has really hit the doldrums, conversion into bulkers no longer looks an option," he said. According to Fistes, one key challenge is delivering the best environmental performance - for industry's own satisfaction and to meet society's expectations. He pointed out that one of our biggest environmental challenges is to show just how clean and efficient the shipping industry is. He said, We need to communicate this to society at large. Take this example. One small car weighing one tonne uses one litre of fuel to move 20 kilometres. A large oil tanker uses one litre of fuel to move one tonne of cargo 2,500 kilometres - which is more than twice as far as was being achieved 20 years ago because tankers have become more efficient. Fistes, Hurdaya ay rma faaliyetleri 2005/06 y llar nda dibe vurdu u bir dönemde, dönüfltürme faaliyetleri zirve yaparak her y l filodan 5, 10, 15 milyon dwt al yordu. Bununla birlikte kuru yük sektörü durgunlu a girdi inden, dökme yük gemisine dönüfltürme art k bir seçenek teflkil etmiyor, dedi. & 044
