Bölüm Baflkanlar m z, kendi görüflleri ile ilgili bize geri bildirimde bulundular, bunlar do rultusunda önemli kararlar alaca z. Burada niyetimiz, Uluslararas Bakalorya Diploma Program 'n n uygulanmas n da mümkün k lacak, okulun vizyonu ve amac n ortaya koyan bir Koç Ders Program oluflturarak her ö renciye hem Türkiye hem de dünyadaki en iyi uygulamalar temel alan zenginlefltirilmifl bir e itim deneyimi kazand rmakt r. Bu ders program n n içeri i ve farkl derslere ayr lan saatler çal flman n sadece bir k sm n oluflturuyor. Bizim üzerinde durdu umuz konu asl nda günlük ak fl hatta tüm seneyi biçimlendirmek ve e er gerekirse istenenleri sa lamak için program (yeniden) yap land rmak. Bu konuyla ilgili en önemli sorunlardan biri okula gidifl gelifllerde harcanan zaman olarak karfl m za ç k yor. Velilerimizin birço u çocuklar n n, okuldan eve dönüflte giderek artan bir zaman harcad klar ndan flikâyetçi, özellikle de okul sonras aktivitelere kalan gençler evlerine çok geç ulaflabiliyorlar. Yeniden flekillendirilmifl bir günlük plan bu konuda bize fayda sa layabilir. Bu sene yaflad m z en önemli rahats zl klardan biri, okul aç ld ktan sonra da devam eden inflaat çal flmalar yd. Ancak kampüsteki bu inflaat çal flmalar n n önemli bir k sm n n bitmek üzere oldu unu bildirmekten mutluluk duyuyorum. Eksiklerin giderilmesi, d fl görüntü ve restorasyon çal flmalar bir süre daha devam edecek. Yerinden sökülen tüm a açlar ve di er bitkiler yeniden dikilecek, asl nda bu çal flmalar n ço u zaten tamamland bile. Herkesin do aya verilen zararla Hello everyone, It is a pleasure to take this opportunity to share a little news with you. One of the most important things we are doing at present concerns the restructuring of the Lise curriculum. Following the Ministry of Education decisions in September and further directives from them since that time concerning the placing of Grades on 'e-school' and the recommended hours of teaching, we are now examining how we cover everything from Grade 9 (and Lise Prep) to Grade 12. Heads of Subject Departments have fed back their views and some important decisions will be taken. The intention is to maintain the vision and purpose of the school through a 'Koç curriculum' which makes the International Baccalaureate Diploma possible but, above all, gives every student an enriched educational experience based on the best of Turkey and the best of international practice. The content of this curriculum and the hours allocated to the various subjects are only part of the story. Our work will involve looking at the shape of the day, indeed the whole year, and (re)constructing it if necessary to deliver what is required. One of the associated issues is the problem of travelling time. Many parents are noting an increased time spent travelling back from school, especially when youngsters stay for activities. A reshaped day may be able to help with this. 2

Ayr ca, Beden E itimi bölümü ile çal flmak ve belli s n f içi becerileri ( Farkl laflt rma - farkl ö renme flekillerine ve becerilerine hitap ederek e itim - ders haz rlama ve planlama) ile ilgili e itimler vermek üzere farkl dan flmanlarla çal flmaktay z. Bir okulun gerçek kalitesi s n f içindeki ya da çal flma ortam ndaki ö retim ve ö renim uygulamalar n n kalitesi ile belli olur. En içten dileklerimle, Robert Lennox One of the discomforts so far this year has been the amount of building work that has continued whilst the school has been in session. I am pleased to report that the major on-site work is nearly completed. There is 'filling in', and some cosmetic and restoration work to continue. All uprooted trees and other plants will be replaced and/or repositioned, indeed a lot of this has already taken place. Some of the existing roads will be returned to nature as soon as our new routes are active. I fully understand the concern over environmental damage. It is to be regretted. Some of it can be restored but lost wild habitat is a sad result of the work. Unfortunately, the alterations to the external highways are further behind schedule than the work on the school site. There is still a flyover and a roundabout to construct before we can make our final linkage to the TEM. I expect our new entrance/exit to be completed by the end of December and this will bring about a slight improvement. The exterior work will not be completed until April or May 2011 and, at the moment, we are planning to use two entrances until the whole work is completed. Finally I would like to report on the various training and development initiatives that I believe will bring added quality to the school. It would be fair to say that the first level of activity involved some re-organisation of, for example, the size of subject departments. They were made more manageable by separating them out into the two schools. There were others measures employed to bring about more effective management and the injection of accountability. The second phase involves the training of key personel and a focus on improving teaching and learning. The school's team of fifty-five senior and middle managers (teaching and administrative) have received initial training on teamwork and collaboration and now enter a phase of further training on managerial techniques and skills. This is on-going training. Momentum will be achieved by direction from the senior team members and the employed consultants who will return periodically to carry out further work. I firmly believe that the best kind of development is that which is supported over time. Beyond this a 'mentorship' approach has been started in Mathematics and with Home Room teachers (Grades 1-3) again to provide day-by-day support and assistance to improve teaching. Further consultants have been employed to work with Physical Education and specific classroom skills ('Differentiation' - addressing different learning modes and different abilties - lesson preparation and planning). In the last analysis, the real quality of a school is to be found in the practice of teaching and learning in the classroom or working environment. bizden from us And the second place winner is: Hamdi Soysal Koç School's Grade 11 student Hamdi Soysal was awarded with the 2nd prize in Third Annual European DNA Day Essay Contest for high school students. Grade 11 student Hamdi Soysal, supervised by Biology teacher Dr. Yeter Erol was the second place winner in the Annual European DNA Day Essay Contest for high school students. The contest took place in Gothenburg, Sweden between 15 April-15 June 2010. From 21 European countries, 142 essays have been submitted, and Hamdi was rewarded with the 2 nd Place award for his essay on Genetic testing allows geneticists to determine an individual's DNA sequence, and research has identified a number of genes (e.g. HMGA2 & GDF5, associated with height). Will scientists and physicians be able to predict adult height from infancy? has impressed the members of the jury based on its originality, its scientific content and the fact that he expressed his views so clearly on genetics and DNA in relation to human disease. Expressing his thoughts about the contest, Hamdi Soysal said: This essay contest is acting as a learning tool and a means to promote the knowledge of genetics within Europe. It intends to challenge students to examine, question and reflect on the importance and social implications of genetic research and its applications. Essays are expected to contain substantive, wellreasoned arguments indicative of a depth of understanding of the issues addressed by the selected essay question. The European Society of Human Genetics The European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) was established in 1967 by a group of outstanding European Geneticists. A non-profit organization, the ESHG is in regular contact with different directorates of the EU commission and other scientific organisations. Its aims are to promote research in basic and applied human and medical genetics, to ensure high standards in clinical practice and to facilitate contacts between all persons who share these aims, particularly those working in Europe. Along with approximately 100 other students who won both international and national awards in various competitions, Hamdi Soysal was given a certificate by the Istanbul National Education Directorate. 4

The Global Youth Conference 2010 The Global Youth Conference 2010 was organized between November 8 th and 11 th by the Earth Focus Foundation with an agenda focused on global issues. The conference, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted around 200 people who are students from all over the world, schools and universities, social organizations and notable professionals in the related field. Issues centered around the themes of Education, Youth and Civil Society, Nuclear, Clean and Renewable Energies, Climate Change and Biodiversity, Trade, Business and Sustainable Development and Message to Cancun COP 16 were discussed. On the second day of the conference, The Koç School students who took the floor to make their presentations made quite an impression on the conference. Not only did they received comments such as Brilliant presentation, congratulations they also demonstrated the bright and apt side of young Turkey. The Earth Focus Foundation board member Dr. Rudolp Rachtenstein said The Koç School did a good job. Better than many politicians who are a little bit disoriented! You are not corrupt, and nobody gave you money to say anything. You used your brains: that is exceptional. We would also like to congratulate the entire team of thirty-eight students who have participated in the conference. Good job, Koç School! The Earth Focus Foundation The Earth Focus Foundation is a Swiss foundation, which is continuing the work with young people started within the renowned Bellerive Foundation. The aim of the Foundation is to empower youth to take on roles in which they actively create a more sustainable world. 5

Successful organization, productive debate The 8 th National Selection Conference of European Youth Parliament (EYP) in Turkey was held at The Koç School. Orhun Güral Grade 11- Vice President of the Koç EYP Club 2010 is the third year of the European Youth Parliament (EYP) Club at the Koç School. When we started EYP at our school in 2007, there were only ten students. However, in 2010 we have over 30 members in the club now. With the cooperation and contribution of all the members, we organized the first EYP Club Conference in our school with the participation of eight schools last year in May. As soon as our session ended, we decided to take our EYP conference experience one step ahead and therefore applied to host the 8 th National Selection Conference of EYP Turkey. Hosting such a session is really an important event for us. When the EYP Turkey board decided that we should organize the session at our school, we (myself and Rumeysa Arslan, Fuat Berk Batur, O uz Can Eren, Deniz Ertan, Mehmet Güral, Mert Özbilek, Iflıl Sa lam, Erman fiener, Ayflegül Uysal, Bora Yavuz, Ali Cem Bozda, Melis Cin, Eda Güler, rem Kürkçü, Can Mutlu, Naz Aslı Öncel, lkem Aysu fiahin, Yaman Türkmen, Deniz Urut, Mehmet Çiftçi, Zeynep Yavuz, Öykü Çildir, Bigem Tosun) immediately started the organization process. After four months of hard work, with the valuable support of our school administration and the Koç EYP club coordinator Hamit Karakaya, we held the 8 th National Selection Conference of EYP Turkey in the Koç School between 11-15 November 2010 with the participation of 20 foreign EYPers from Serbia, Norway, Finland, Southern Cyprus, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, Romania, Austria, Czech Republic and Poland as officials (journalist, chair), and 150 students from 18 schools of Istanbul, Bursa, Kayseri, Mersin, Izmir and Ankara as delegates. In the first day of the conference, delegates engaged in team building activities. Furthermore, in the following two days, they were all in their committees and busy with discussing global and regional issues. How should Turkey use its influence in the Middle East to achieve sustainable peace in the region?, How should the EU organize itself to react most appropriately to future humanitarian crises?, What measures should the EU take to neither demonize genetically modified food nor ignore its risks? were some of the issues that students discussed. On the last day, the general assembly was held where resolutions of all 10 committees were discussed and productive debates took place. 29 students among all the delegates were chosen to participate in one of the four conferences, including the 66 th International Session of the EYP in Athens, which will be held in different countries of Europe in 2011. Both the sessions and organization process itself were successful in terms of raising awareness of global issues, gaining team work spirit, sharing new ideas and experiences for all the participants. As the young EYPers of the Koç School, we are looking forward to having more people to share such experiences with. 7

Ö renciler için Ö renme Becerileri, veliler için S nav Kayg s konular na yönelik olan konferans, Atakan Demirseren Toplant Salonu'nda simültane tercüme olana yla gerçekleflti. Konferansı oldukça yararlı bulan 11. sınıf velileri memnuniyetlerini, bu tip seminerlerin tüm seviyelere verilmesini isteyerek dile getirdi. The Koç Debate Society In its first year as a club activity, the debate society is off to a running start. Led by grade 10 student Tara Avunduk and English teacher Annie Özsaraç, the debate team consists of nine students from grades nine to twelve. The team meets each Wednesday during the activity debating different topics, gearing up for debates with other schools. Their hard work and effort paid off when it was time to debate The Canterbury School from Fort Meyers Florida, via Skype. The motion of the debate was capital punishment, and The Koç Team argued as the opposition. While it was a friendly debate, the Koç students held their own and argued excellent points. The advisers from Canterbury School, Konstantin Georgiadis and Barbara Bacon, were impressed at the strategy and articulate nature of Koç debators Mert Salur, Tara Avunduk and Alara çöz. This debate was a part of the ongoing cultural exchange with The Canterbury School via the Bridges project. The team felt it was a great experience to interact with students from another culture and looks forward to more opportunities to engage with our friends across the Atlantic. Çok sesli müzi in, ülkemizde geliflmesini sa layan pek çok kurum, konservatuvarlar, senfoni ve oda orkestralar, Cumhuriyet'in ilk y llar nda kuruldu. Bu kurumlarda pek çok sanatç m z yetiflti; ülke ve dünya çap nda ünlendiler. stanbul Yayl Sazlar Oda Orkestras da 20 y l aflk n bir süredir stanbul ve Türkiye'nin kültürel yaflant s na katk da bulunuyor. Teachers' Day Night and Service Award Ceremony 'Teachers' Day' Night and Service Award Ceremony took place on the 27 th of November in Rahmi M. Koç Museum. It was a delightful evening with immaculate organization. Teachers and staff of The Koç School who have fulfilled their 10 th, 20 th and 30 th service year, were presented service awards by the Koç Group CEO Mr. Turgay Durak. 14

Koç Özel lkö retim Okulu ve Lisesi Kütüphanesi birbirinden ilginç aktiviteleri ö retmen ve ö renciler ile buluflturmaya devam ediyor. Bunlardan biri de ünlü manga yazar Queenie Chan' n 4 Kas m'da ö rencilerle birlikte gerçeklefltirdi i manga atölyesi oldu. Atölye çal flmas nda ö renciler kendi manga karakterlerini kendileri yaratt lar. Queenie Chan ö rencilere manga çizimi hakk nda bir sunum yapt ve lise ö rencileri ile bu çizimlerin püf noktalar n paylaflt. Daha sonra ö rencilerden bu bilgiler fl nda çizim yapmalar n istedi. Kat l mc lar çizimlerini tamamlad ktan sonra Queenie Chan her bir çizimi inceleyerek bunlar hakk nda yorumlar n paylaflt. Ö rencilerin manga türü ve teknikleri hakk nda bilgi ald klar ve ayn zamanda e lendikleri bu e itici aktivite sonunda Queenie Chan lise kütüphanesinde kitaplar n imzalad ; ö rencilerle sanat ve edebiyat konusunda söylefliler yapt. Ö rencilerin çizimleri uzun bir süre lise binas ndaki Suna K raç Kütüphanesi'nde sergilendi. Queenie Chan okulumuzun okumaya ve kültürel faaliyetlere verdi i önemden çok memnun kald n ve okuldan güzel an larla ayr ld n ö rencilerle yapt söyleflilerde dile getirdi. Ö rencilerin okuma ve araflt rma kültürünü do rudan etkileyen bu tür aktivitelerin kütüphane taraf ndan organize edilmesini çok anlaml bulan Chan okulun sanat ve edebiyata yaklafl m ndan duydu u memnuniyeti de okul idarecileriyle paylaflt. Queenie Chan kimdir? 1980 y l nda Hong Kong'da do an Queenie Chan, 6 yafl nda ailesiyle birlikte Avustralya'ya tafl n r. Çizim yapmaya 18 yafl nda bafllayan Chan, 2002 y l nda Yönetim Biliflim Sistemleri (Information Systems) bölümünden derece ile mezun olur. 2004 y l nda, Los Angeles merkezli manga yay nc s Tokyopop için 'The Dreaming -Okuldaki S r' adl üç kitapl k gizem-korku serisini çizmeye bafllar. Serinin en son kitab 2007 y l nda yay mlan r ve bugüne dek dünya genelinde yedi dile çevrilir. Bunun yan s ra, New York Times' n çok satanlar listesinde yer alan yazar, Dean Koontz'un 'Garip Thomas-Odd Thomas' roman serisine girifl niteli i tafl yan 'Güvendi imiz Garip fieyler - In Odd We Trust' ad ndaki tek ciltlik bir çizgi roman için yay mc Del Ray'le iflbirli ine girer. 2008 y l n n Haziran ay nda yay mlanan kitap, ilk haftas nda çizgi roman sat fl listelerinde birinci olur. 15

Going to the Globals Destination Imagination is the world's largest celebration of creative problem solving. Winning the chance to go to the Globals in Knoxville, Tennessee to compete in Destination Imagination feels like winning the golden ticket to the famous Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. All year, our students work on an eight minute theater performances and architectural design to prepare for the chance to compete in the Globals. From May 24 th to 29 th, each year, the campus of the University of Tennessee is transformed into a beautiful, green, family picnic 'fun fair' type of atmosphere. Meals are served outdoors, school teams and family teams are housed in the university residences, local businesses open their doors to the 15,000 guests that flood the small university town of Knoxville. The question is: will we be good enough to win at the Nationals again this year? It resembled the closing ceremony of the 2010 Canadian winter olympics with its beautiful light show, guest speakers and awards acknowledging the hardwork of the young people. Turkey, in particular, was one of the countries to be recognized for its two Renaissance awards for outstanding Design, Engineering, Execution, Performance. The two schools were Robert College and Darüflflafaka School. Both schools were elated with the recognition of Turkey. Destination Imagination is the world's largest celebration of creative problem solving. Working closely with Robert College, Eyübo lu and Enka schools, the Koç middle school has participated in the Globals for three consecutive years. 16

Full gear training for the trainers Introduction to Differentiated Instruction Teachers of the Koç School have started the academic year by attending a chain of conferences starting from August 2010. Between 23-25 August they attended three full day seminars by Ed. D. Dr. Jennifer Beasley and Dr. Vera Blake - Educational Consultant about Challenge and Support for Every Learner, Introduction to Differentiated Instruction and Differentiation in Action. Why do you think the Koç School did such a training on Differentiated Instruction? Dr. Jennifer Beasely: After speaking with the leaders and teachers, one of the reasons the training was wanted, was due to increasing diversity in the school. The school is blessed with students who come from many cultural and academic backgrounds. Given the fact that Istanbul is a live, vibrant city with diverse populations, Koç is a wonderful melting pot for this community. Teachers at the school want to remain open to being responsive to not only students' differences culturally, but also in terms of readiness, interest and learning profile. The training in differentiating instruction is a step towards thinking more explicitly about responsive teaching. Dr. Vera Blake: It is my understanding that the Koç School, like many others, has offered training and support for Differentiated Instruction for a number of reasons. Primary among those reasons is the desire to continually prepare students who are inquirers, risk takers, good communicators, knowledgeable, reflective, principled, open-minded, caring and balanced in a world that constantly evolves with increasing challenges. To accomplish this mission, Koç School leaders continue to research and seek increasing research on the best ways to teach and support student learning. Differentiated Instruction is comprised of years of the most credible, and comprehensive research about learning and achievement and synthesizes it into userfriendly methodology that support teachers, administrators and other educational stakeholders in their mission. Why do you think the Koç School preferred you as the instructor? Dr. Jennifer Beasely: First of all, I have a passion for differentiation! As a teacher, I have been guided by this philosophy and love sharing about it. Secondly, I have worked in Istanbul in the past as well as with other schools in the area of differentiating instruction. My educational background as well as my work at the university in differentiating instruction helps me bring many resources to the school that can help with implementing this philosophy. Finally, I have been an elementary teacher for many years, and my own experiences with my students give me some background to share with fellow teachers. 18
