ENGLISH PROFICIENCY EXAM TDEU The English Proficiency of the students who are accepted into Ipek University is assessed through the English Proficiency Exam (IPEX) prepared by the Preparatory School Test Development and Evaluation (TDEU). The students who score 65 or higher are exempted from Preparatory School education and start their education in their respective departments. The IPEX aims to determine the level of readiness of students for an English-medium academic environment. Therefore, the exam is comprised of 5 sections covering the areas of reading, listening, writing, language use and speaking. The production, administration and feedback processes of the exam are conducted by the TDEU, using scientifically-validated digital tools. Additionally, the exam is produced and structured with a view to comply with testing validity concerns. The duration of the exam is approximately 255 minutes, including at least 30-minute-break, and the sections are as follows: a) READING (60 minutes) (20 points) SESSION 1 This task consists of two reading passages. The word count for each of these is 800-1500. All the questions in this task have multiple-choice answers. The questions in this section aim to test the students reading skills such as text analysis, critical thinking, establishing connections, reaching logical conclusions, identifying the functions of words or phrases, inserting a sentence and matching paragraphs with their titles. b) LISTENING (30 minutes) (20 points) There are two tasks in this section. In the first task, students are required to read and answer the questions as they listen. In this section no extra time is given for answering the questions. In the second task, students are required to take notes on the main points of a listening passage and use these notes to answer the questions on this task within ten minutes. In both tasks, recordings are approximately 10-minutes-long. In this section, for which academic texts are used, students are required to answer multiple-choice questions, fill in tables and gaps, compile lists and match words or phrases. 30 MINUTE BREAK
SESSION 2 TDEU a) WRITING (90 minutes) (25 points) The writing section has two tasks, which are the Integrated and Independent tasks. In the integrated task students are first given a reading and then a listening passage. Having taken notes on the main points of both passages, students are then required to explain the relationships between the two passages. An ideal response to this question should have 2-3 paragraphs of a total of 150-200 words. The second task is an independent essay in which students are required to explain their personal opinion on a given topic. An ideal essay in this task should have 300-350 words. b) LANGUAGE USE (25 minutes) (10 points) In this section students grammar and vocabulary skills are tested with multiple-choice questions. There are two tasks with 10 questions in each. Students are required to fill in the gaps in a text by choosing the correct answer. SPEAKING (20 minutes per pair) (25 points) SESSION 3 The speaking section of the IPEX consists of 3 parts which are: Guided Interview Individual Discussion Pair Discussion The exam starts with unassessed warm-up questions. The warm-up is followed by the Guided Interview, in which each student is posed a few questions about their personal opinions or preferences on a specified topic. In the second part, the students are given several cue cards and they are asked to draw one and answer the set of questions on their cards. A topic is specified for each cue card and the questions on the cards relate to that specified topic. In this task, each student is given 1 minute to get prepared or take notes and is expected to speak for 2-3 minutes. In the last part, the students interact with each other. A situation and a related problem are introduced by the examiner and the students are expected to discuss the situation using the given visual or written stimuli for 5-6 min.
İNGİLİZCE YETERLİK SINAVI İpek Üniversitesine kabul edilen öğrencilerin İngilizce dil bilgilerinin yeterliği Hazırlık Okulu tarafından düzenlenen İngilizce Yeterlik Sınavı ile belirlenir. Bu sınavdan 65 puan ve üzerinde not alan öğrenciler, İngilizce Hazırlık Programından muaf tutulurlar. Söz konusu öğrenciler kabul edildikleri bölümde birinci sınıfta eğitime başlarlar. İngilizce Yeterlik Sınavı, öğrencilerin eğitim dilinin İngilizce olduğu akademik bir ortama hazır bulunuşluk seviyelerini ölçmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu yüzden sınav, okuma, dinleme, yazma, dil kullanımı ve konuşma gibi dil becerilerini kapsayan 5 bölümden oluşmaktadır. Sınavın üretim, uygulama ve geribildirim süreçlerinin tamamının kontrolü Sınav Geliştirme ve Değerlendirme birimi tarafından güvenilirliği onaylanmış dijital araçlar tarafından yapılmakta, sınavın kendi içerisinde ölçmedeğerlendirme ilkelerine uygunluğu denetlenmektedir. Sınav 30 dakika ara dahil yaklaşık 255 dakika sürüp aşamaları şu şekildedir: a) OKUMA (60 dakika) (20 puan) BÖLÜM 1 İki adet okuma parçasından oluşur. Parçalar ortalama 800-1500 kelimeden oluşmaktadır. Bu bölümdeki soruların cevapları çoktan seçmelidir. Bu sorularda öğrencilerden metni derinlemesine incelemesi, eleştirel yaklaşması, bağlantılar kurması, mantıklı sonuçlar çıkarması, kullanılan ifadelerin işlevini tespit etmesi, bir paragrafa cümle eklemesi, paragrafları başlıkları ile eşleştirmesi beklenmektedir. b) DİNLEME (30 dakika) (20 puan) Dinleme bölümü iki bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde, öğrencilerden kendilerine verilen soruları okumaları ve parçayı dinlerken cevaplandırmaları beklenmektedir. Bu bölümde dinlerken cevaplanan sorular için ayrıca bir cevaplama süresi verilmemektedir. İkinci bölümde, öğrencilerin parçayı dinlerken notlar almaları ve aldıkları notlarla dinleme sonrasında kendilerine verilecek soruları cevaplandırmaları beklenmektedir. Bu bölümde soruların cevaplanması için 10 dakika süre tanınmaktadır. Her iki bölümdeki dinleme kayıtları yaklaşık 10 dakikadır. Akademik konulardan hazırlanan bu bölümdeki sorularda öğrencilerden çoktan seçmeli sorulara cevap vermeleri, tablo ve metinlerdeki boşlukları doldurmaları ya da listeleme ve eşleştirme yapmaları beklenmektedir. 30 DAKİKA ARA
BÖLÜM 2 a) YAZMA (90 dakika) (25 puan) Bütünleşik (Integrated) ve bağımsız (Independent) olmak üzere iki bölümden oluşmaktadır. Bütünleşik kompozisyon yazma bölümünde, öğrencilere ilk olarak bir okuma, daha sonra ise bir dinleme parçası verilmekte ve iki metin arasındaki fikir ilişkilerini anlatan yaklaşık 2-3 paragraftan oluşan bir kompozisyon (150-200 kelime) yazmaları beklenmektedir. Bağımsız kompozisyon (300-350 kelime) bölümünde ise, öğrencilerin verilen bir konu hakkındaki kişisel görüşlerini ifade etmeleri beklenmektedir. b) DİL KULLANIMI (25 dakika) (10 puan) Dil bilgisi ve kelime bilgisi bölümlerinden oluşup sorular çoktan seçmelidir. Her 2 bölüm 10 sorudan oluşmaktadır. Bu bölümdeki sorular bir metin içerisindeki boşlukların doldurulması şeklinde cevaplanmaktadır. KONUŞMA (20 dakika) (25 puan) BÖLÜM 3 IPEX Konuşma Sınavı aşağıdaki üç aşamadan oluşmaktadır Kontrollü Mülakat Bireysel Konuşma Karşılıklı konuşma Sınav ölçüme tabi tutulmayan ön hazırlık soruları ile başlar. Ön hazırlık sorularını, her bir öğrencinin belirlenmiş bir konu üzerinde fikir veya tercihlerini beyan ettiği Kontrollü Mülakat kısmı izler. İkinci kısımda öğrencilere bir kaç adet kart sunulur ve bu kartlardan bir tanesini seçerek kart üzerindeki soruları cevaplandırmaları istenir. Her bir kart için bir konu belirlenmiş olup, kart üzerindeki tüm sorular o konuya ilişkindir. Bu aşamada, her bir öğrenciye hazırlık ve not almak için 1; konuşmak için de 2-3 dakika zaman verilir. Son kısımda öğrenciler karşılıklı konuşurlar. Sınav uygulayıcısı tarafından bir durum ve duruma ilişkin bir problem sunulur ve öğrencilerin verilen görsel ya da yazılı başlıkları kullanarak durumu tartışmaları beklenir.
