TLIT 219 TURKISH MODERNIZATION: A FAMILY ISSUE Fall 2014-15 Pelin Ünsal E-mail: punsal@ku.edu.tr Office: SOS 314 Office hours: Tuesday - Thursday: 10:00 11:00 (or by appointment) Course Description: This is an interdisciplinary course which aims to analyze the social change in Turkey from the late nineteenth century until the present day by focusing on Turkish novel. Family stories will be analyzed as a metaphor to understand modernization in Turkey. Since the first Turkish novels written during the Tanzimat era, family and family life have been one of the main concerns of the Ottoman-Turkish elite who has adopted the self-assigned mission of modernizing the Ottoman society. On the other hand, Modernization and Westernization attempts were strongly criticized in Turkish literature. In this course, the social change and modernization attempts in Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic will be discussed by examining the novels from different epochs in a chronological order. Some of the themes will be the impact of modernization on traditional family structures, the role of the family in nation-building process and the changes in the construction of gender roles in the family. Course Requirements : The course will be based on lectures and discussions on the selected literary texts, therefore the students are expected to come to classroom having done their readings. In the first three weeks, there will be lectures on the historical development of the concept of modern family in Turkey. In the following weeks, there will be class discussions based on the selected texts and students are expected to write 2-3 pages long response papers and submit them at the dates specified in the class schedule below. Each student has to write 4 out of 7 response papers. Late submissions will not be accepted. Attendance and participation in class discussions is essential since it consists a significant percentage (20%) of your grade. A final paper is going to be submitted at the end of the semester. Accidental plagiarism, on the other hand, may be considered as a more acceptable form of plagiarism by some students, which is certainly not how it is perceived by the University administration and faculty.
