Dear Students, Welcome to the School of Languages and to the Foundations Development Year Program. The aim of this handbook is to give you detailed information about the Foundations Development Year (FDY), the courses we offer, course assessment and general rules and expectations. Please read all the information very carefully and consult your instructors or myself if you have any queries. The FDY courses offered by the School of Languages (SL) are an integral part of the education offered at Sabanc University and aim to provide you with the necessary foundation skills and knowledge to excel in your academic studies. More specifically, we would like to help you to attain an excellent level of language proficiency, develop academic skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing, develop learner autonomy and study skills, critically appraise your own skills and abilities, develop creative and critical thinking, and be well equipped with general background knowledge. I would also like to mention that the FDY differs from other preparatory or Haz rl k programs in Turkey in a number of ways. A major difference is that the SL offers not only English courses but also a Communication Skills in Turkish course aiming to enrich your skills and knowledge in Turkish. A second difference is that our course assessment is not only exam-based; the fullfilment of course requirements plays a very important role in advancement from one level to another. Another difference is that our course materials are both theme-based and content-based. In addition to helping you develop your English language proficiency and academic skills, these materials help you to expand your knowledge of the world in a variety of areas. To this end, we have designed and developed our own set of coursebooks, Beyond the Boundaries: English in an Academic Environment for use at Basic, Intermediate and Upper Intermediate levels. We strongly believe that with this learning, you will go beyond the boundaries and develop an excellent level of language and academic skills as well as a knowledge base to help you in your academic studies. We will do our best to support your learning during your time with us. For effective learning, however, it is vital that you attend all classes, study hard and regularly, participate actively in class, do the assigned homework, and be punctual in all aspects of your work. Please also make full use of the support systems and facilities available both in the School of Languages and in the University since these provide valuable opportunities for further learning and development. Bu el kitabının amacı,sizlere Temel Geliştirme Yılı nda (TGY), sunulan dersler, ders değerlendirmesi, genel kurallar ve beklentiler ile ilgili detaylı bilgi vermektir. Lütfen tüm bilgileri dikkatli bir şekilde okuyunuz ve sorunuz olduğu takdirde öğretmenlerinize veya bana danışınız. Diller Okulu (DO) tarafından verilen TGY dersleri, Sabancı Üniversitesi nde sunulan eğitimin önemli bir parçasını oluşturmaktadır. Bu derslerin amacı, sizlere akademik çalışmalarınızda mükemmel bir düzeyi yakalamanız için gerekli olan temel becerileri ve bilgi donanımını vermektir. TGY, Türkiye deki diğer Hazırlık programlarından farklılık göstermektedir. Bu farklılıkların başında gelen özelliklerden birisi, Diller Okulu nda sunulan İngilizce derslerinin yanı sıra TGY de sizlerin Türkçe dilini ve becerilerinizi geliştirmeye yönelik bir Türkçe İletişim Becerileri dersinin sunulmasıdır. İkinci bir farklılık, ders değerlendirmelerimizin sadece sınav odaklı olmamasıdır; derslerdeki sınıf içi başarı bir seviyeden diğerine ilerlemekte önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Başka bir farklılık, derslerimizde kullanılan materyallerin tematik ve içerik odaklı olmasıdır. Bu yaklaşımın amacı, sizlerin bir yandan İngilizce dil yeterliliğinizi ve akademik becerilerinizi geliştirirken, diğer yandan da çeşitli alan ve konularda genel bilginizi zenginleştirmektir. Bu amaçla sizlerin Temel, Orta ve İleri düzeydeki dil öğreniminize en iyi şekilde katkıda bulunmak için Beyond the Boundaries: English in an Academic Environment ders kitabı serimizi oluşturduk. İnanıyoruz ki, sizlerin bu öğrenimle ufukların ötesine giderek mükemmel bir dil ve akademik beceriler seviyesine ulaşacak ve akademik çalışmalarınızda size yardımcı olacak kuvvetli bir bilgi temeli edineceksiniz. LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS FOR THE FOUNDATIONS DEVELOPMENT YEAR (FDY) ENGLISH PROGRAM 1. Basic English ENG 001 You will be given a placement test at the beginning of the academic year to determine which program you will follow at the Basic level. If you have no English or very little English, for a short period, you will take part in an intensive general English program that initially focuses more on language knowledge and use (grammar and vocabulary). If you have a little more English, you will start the core programme. By the end of the Basic course, you will all have completed the core program. The aim of the Basic course is to give you extensive language input and basic strategies to help cope with academic content, communicate effectively in English when speaking and writing and also understand when reading and listening. Initially, you will read texts of between 1 and 2 pages and this will increase to up to 3 pages. In the same way you will start with approximately 7 minute listening texts and progress to 12 minute listenings by the end of the course. You will also begin to develop academic skills such as notetaking, giving oral presentations or having discussions. You will take part in a pair and group discussion, lasting approximately 5 and 9 minutes respectively, on a subject that you will have studied in the classroom. During this course, you will develop your independent study skills, which will be essential throughout your academic life, for example, how to manage your time and how to record and learn vocabulary. This course also provides you with additional support on how to use your laptops, exploit the Internet and other technology to help you in your studies. 2. Intermediate English - ENG 002 The Intermediate course aims to give you extensive practice with the academic skills that you will need to be successful at university, in addition to improving your language skills and helping you become fluent users of English. During the Intermediate course, you will start to do intensive independent reading. The texts you read will be long and academic in nature. You will be expected to cope with reading texts of approximately 3 pages by the end of the course. You will learn how to take effective notes while reading and how to use the information from this reading in your writing and in your speaking. You will be required to take part in group discussions of approximately 9 minutes on subjects that you have studied. Listening texts will be longer and academic in nature. You will learn to listen to mini-lectures of up to 15 minutes and take notes while listening. You will also develop your English grammar and vocabulary knowledge. You will continue to develop your computer and technology skills. 6
3. Upper Intermediate English - ENG 003 The aim of this course is to help you to continue to improve your language, academic and study skills so that you are ready to enter Sabanc University Freshman year. You will be exposed to content that is related to the academic disciplines that you will encounter during your undergraduate studies. If you pass this course, you should be able to cope with the academic and language demands of a full time university undergraduate course taught in English. The main focus of the Upper Intermediate course is to learn how to understand and use information and ideas from your reading. During this course you will do a lot of reading and note-taking from texts of up to 5 pages. You will use your notes to take part in class and group discussions. By the end of the course you will be expected to participate in a 12 minute group discussion on a subject that you will have studied. You will learn about academic writing conventions and how to use other writers ideas in your work. You will also further develop your lecture listening and note-taking skills with texts of up to 18 minutes. In addition, you will advance your English grammar and vocabulary knowledge. In the last week of the course you will get help in preparing for the ELAE. You can refer to the Foundations Development Year English Program Exit Level Descriptors on page 46 for detailed information on learning outcomes for each language and skill area at each level. 7
TEMEL GELİŞTİRME YILI (TGY) İNGİLİZCE PROGRAMI İÇİN DÜZEY TANIMLARI 1. Temel Düzeyde İngilizce - ENG 001 Akademik yılın başında, hangi programı takip edeceğinizi belirlemek için size bir yerleştirme sınavı verilecektir. İngilizce bilginiz hiç yok ise veya çok azsa, kısa bir süre için dil bilgisi ve kullanımına (gramer ve kelime) ağırlık veren yoğun bir Genel İngilizce programına katılacaksınız. İngilizce bilginiz daha ileri bir seviyede ise biraz daha farklı bir programa başlayacaksınız. Temel düzeyin sonunda tüm öğrenciler çok benzer bir temel programı tamamlamış olacaklardır. Temel Düzeyde İngilizce dersinin amacı, sizlere geniş ve kapsamlı dilbilgisinin yanı sıra, akademik konularla başa çıkmayı sağlayacak, İngilizce konuşurken ve yazarken etkin bir biçimde iletişim kurabilecek, okuduğunuzu ve dinlediğinizi anlamanıza yardımcı olacak stratejileri vermektir. İlk başlarda 1 ve 2 sayfalık metinler okuyacaksınız. Daha sonra bu metinlerin uzunluğu 3 sayfaya çıkacaktır. Aynı şekilde dinleme metinleri ilk başlarda yaklaşık 7 dakikalık olacak ve daha sonraları 12 dakikaya kadar yükselecektir. Bunlarla birlikte not almak, sözlü sunum ve tartışma yapmak gibi akademik becerilerinizi geliştirmeye başlayacaksınız. Daha önce sınıfta çalıştığınız bir konuyla ilgili sırasıyla 5 ve 9 dakika süren ikili ve grup tartışmalarına katılacaksınız. Temel düzeyde İngilizce programı esnasında tüm akademik hayatınız boyunca size çok gerekli olan zamanınızı doğru planlama ve yeni kelimeleri kaydetme ve öğrenme gibi bağımsız çalışma becerilerinizi de geliştireceksiniz. Aynı zamanda bu program sizlere dizüstü bilgisayarları ve İnternet kullanımı konusunda destek verecek ve öğrenme sürecinde sizlere yardımcı olacak diğer teknolojik donanımı etkili bir şekilde kullanmanızı sağlayacaktır. 2. Orta Düzeyde İngilizce - ENG 002 Orta Düzeyde İngilizce dersinin amacı, üniversite eğitiminiz süresince başarılı olmanız için gereken akademik becerileri kapsamlı bir biçimde uygulamalı olarak kazanabileceğiniz ortamı sağlamanın yanısıra dil becerilerinizi geliştirmeniz ve İngilizce yi akıcı bir biçimde kullanabilir düzeye gelmeniz için sizlere yardımcı olmaktır. Bu düzey süresince yoğun olarak bağımsız okuma yapmaya başlayacaksınız. Okuyacağınız metinler uzun ve akademik içerikli olacaktır. Düzeyin sonunda yaklaşık 3 sayfalık okuma metinlerini tam olarak anlamanız beklenmektedir. Okurken etkin biçimde not almayı ve bu bilgiyi yazı ve konuşmalarınızda kullanmayı öğreneceksiniz. Önceden çalışmış olduğunuz konularla ilgili yaklaşık 9 dakikalık grup tartışmalarına katılmanız gerekmektedir. Dinleme metinleri ise daha uzun ve akademik içerikli olacaktır. 15 dakika kadar süren üniversite derslerini dinleme ve dinlerken not almayı öğreneceksiniz. Aynı zamanda İngilizce gramer ve kelime bilginizi geliştireceksiniz. Bilgisayar ve teknoloji becerilerinizi de geliştirmeye devam edecksiniz. 8
3. İleri Düzeyde İngilizce - ENG 003 İleri Düzeyde İngilizce dersinin amacı Sabancı Üniversitesi Birinci Sınıf derslerine başlamaya hazır duruma gelmeniz için gerekli olan İngilizce dil, akademik ve çalışma becerilerini geliştirmenize yardımcı olmaktır. Bu programda üniversite lisans eğitiminiz süresince karşılaşacağınız akademik öğretilerle ilgili konular ele alınacaktır. Bu düzeyi başarıyla tamamladığınızda İngilizce olarak sunulan lisans düzeyi derslerinin gerektirdiği akademik ve dil becerilerini kazanmış olacaksınız. Bu dersin ana amacı, okuduğunuz metinleri tam olarak anlamayı ve okunan metinlerdeki bilgiyi ve fikirleri kullanmayı öğrenmenizi sağlamaktır. Bu ders süresince birçok metin okuma ve okuduklarınızdan not alma alıştırması yapacaksınız. Bu metinler en fazla 5 sayfalık olacaktır. Aldığınız bu notları sözel olarak yapılacak sınıf içi ve grup tartışmalarında kullanacaksınız. Düzeyin sonuna doğru daha önceden çalışmış olduğunuz bir konu hakkında 12 dakikalık bir grup tartışmasına katılacaksınız. Aynı zamanda akademik yazma kurallarını ve başka yazarların fikirlerini kendi yazınızda nasıl kullanacağınızı öğreneceksiniz. Aynı zamanda üniversite derslerini dinleme ve dinlerken not alma becerisini daha da geliştireceksiniz. Bu dinleme metinleri yaklaşık 18 dakikaya kadar çıkacaktır. Bununla beraber İngilizce gramer ve kelime bilginizi daha da ileri seviyeye ulaştıracaksınız. Bu düzeyin son haftasında ELAE sınavına hazırlık amaçlı alıştırmalar yapacaksınız. Her düzey için belirlenmiş dil ve beceri alanları ile ilgili detaylı bilgiyi 49 no.lu sayfadaki Temel Geliştirme Yılı İngilizce Programı-Seviyeler için Öğrenim Çıktıları adlı bölümde bulabilirsiniz 9
LEVEL OVERVIEWS FOR BASIC, INTERMEDIATE AND UPPER- INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH COURSES At the beginning of the academic year, you will take a placement test, ELAE Stage 1 (and some of you also ELAE Stage 2) and this will determine your level of English and the course that you will start at SL-FDY Basic, Intermediate or Upper Intermediate. Your goal will be to complete each course successfully. When you successfully complete the Upper Intermediate course, you will then be eligible to take the ELAE. You need to get a grade of C SL (70-79 Satisfactory in the ELAE) or above to pass the ELAE and then start your Freshman courses. Based on your performance throughout the courses and exams on the FDY English Program, you will be assessed and given a grade out of 100 on each level. If this grade is 70 and above (a Satisfactory grade), you can move on to the next level. Basic Starters If you start at the Basic level, you have the opportunity to complete the FDY program in June. This is possible by successfully completing Basic in the Fall semester (Semester 1), Intermediate and Upper Intermediate in the Spring Semester (Semester 2). Name of course Length of course Semester 1 Intermediate - ENG 002 16 weeks Semester 2 Upper-intermediate - ENG 003 16 weeks Upper Intermediate Starters If you start at the Upper Intermediate level, and successfully complete the course in the Fall Semester, you can take the January ELAE and have the opportunity to become a Freshman student in the Spring term as a Spring Freshman student. 10
Name of course Length of course Semester 1 Upper-intermediate - ENG 003 16 weeks Progressing and Repeating The normal period of instruction for all FDY English courses is 16 weeks with the exception of the summer period which is 8 weeks. All of you have the opportunity to complete the FDY English program by June in your first year. You also have the opportunity to study for a longer period on a given course either by repeating a course or progressing through a level. The charts on page 52 provide a detailed explanation of this. If your course grade is Unsatisfactory (below 70), you will need to repeat the same level. In the 2 nd semester, if you are a Basic or Intermediate student repeating the same level, you will receive a course grade after the first 8 weeks of the course. If you receive an S grade (70 and above) on this course, you can move on to the next level in the second 8 weeks of the Spring semester. If your course grade for the first 8 weeks of the 2 nd semester is below 70, you will receive a P grade ( Progressing ) and continue with the rest of the course for 8 weeks. In this case, you will receive another course grade at the end of the Spring semester. If your course grade is 70 or above, you will move on to the next level in the summer period. However, if at the end of the Spring semester your course grade is Unsatisfactory, you will be dismissed (as two U grades result in dismissal see Instruction Letter 19/a). For Upper Intermediate students repeating the same level in the 2 nd semester, you will receive a course grade at the end of another 16 week course. If you receive an S grade, you can take the June ELAE. If you receive a U grade, you will be dismissed. Helpful Notes: For successful completion of the FDY Program you can receive a U or P grade only once. You can repeat a level only once By the end of the first academic year, if you have not yet completed the Upperintermediate level and only received one U grade within the year, you will take the Upper-intermediate course in the Fall semester of the next academic year. All courses offered during the summer must be completed within 8 weeks. Progressing can only take place in the second semester (at the end of the first 8 weeks or second 8 weeks). 11
TEMEL, ORTA VE İLERİ DÜZEYDE İNGİLİZCE DERSLERİNE GENEL BAKIŞ Akademik yılın başında ELAE 1. Aşama olarak adlandırılan bir yerleştirme sınavına gireceksiniz. Bu sınavın sonuçlarına göre bazılarınız ELAE 2. Aşamayı da alacak. Bu sınavların amacı, sizin İngilizce seviyenizi belirleyerek Diller Okulu Temel Geliştirme Yılına hangi düzeyden (Temel, Orta veya İleri) başlayacağınızı saptamaktır. Sizin amacınız her düzeyi başarıyla tamamlamak olacak. İleri Düzeyde İngilizce dersini de başarıyla tamamladıktan sonra ELAE sınavını almaya hak kazanaksınız. Bu sınavdan C-SL (70-79 ELAE sınavından Yeterli ) veya üstünde bir not alırsanız TGY İngilizce Programını okumadan Birinci Yıl derslerine başlayabilirsiniz. TGY İngilizce Programında ise dersler ve sınavlarda göstermiş olduğunuz performansa göre değerlendirileceksiniz ve her düzeyde size 100 üstünden bir not verilecek. Eğer bu not 70 ve üstü (S) ise bir üst düzeye geçmeye hak kazanacaksınız. 1. Temel Düzeyde Başlayanlar Temel Düzeyde başlarsanız, TGY programını Haziran da tamamlama şansına sahip olursunuz. Bu da Güz Döneminde (1. Yarıyıl) Temel Düzeyi, Bahar Döneminde (2. Yarıyıl) Orta ve İleri Düzeyi başarıyla tamamlamak suretiyle mümkün olur. Dersin Adı Dersin Süresi I. Hepinizin TGY İngilizce Programını birinci yılın sonundaki Haziran ayında bitirme şansı vardır. Aynı zamanda seviyeye devam veya seviyeyi tekrarlamak için TGY de daha uzun bir süre öğrenim görme imkanı vardır. 54 nolu sayfadaki tablolar size bu konuda daha detaylı bilgi verecektir. ASSESSMENT OF BASIC, INTERMEDIATE AND UPPER- INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH COURSES The assessment methods for Basic, Intermediate and Upper-intermediate English are very similar. Your overall grade will be made up of course-based and exam-based assessment. The main parts of the assessment are given below. In order to be eligible to take the ELAE, you need to successfully complete the ENG 003 Upper-intermediate English course with a minimum overall grade of 70%. Process Writing (15 %) : Depending on the length of your course, you will be required to complete one or two pieces of process writing. For each piece of writing you will write an outline and first draft and then, after receiving feedback from your teacher, you will have time to make changes to improve your writing. At the Intermediate and Upper-intermediate Levels, you will be required to do extensive background reading before writing. In-class Writing exams (15 %): In the writing exams you will be asked to respond to short answer questions and also write an essay of 250-350 words depending on the level. As you become more experienced writers you will be expected to write longer and better quality essays. Oral assessment (10 %): Your oral discussion skills will be assessed during the first semester. You will be assessed through pair work or group work, including discussions and debates. During the second semester, you may also be assessed on your ability to research, analyse and report on key issues in oral presentations. Mid-term and Final exams (50 %) : On each course you will have two exams: one midterm and one final exam. These exams will test your reading, listening and use of language. Teacher Assessment (10 %) : Your active participation in class and tutorials, your attendance and the quality of your homework also contribute to your final grade. The weighting of some components will change depending on the course. Your teacher will give you exact details of the assessment methods, the dates of assessments, deadlines and the criteria used to assess your work at the start of each course. 14

Some statistics In past academic years, after the September ELAEs: the pass rate for Basic starters was about 75% the pass rate for Intermediate starters was about 97% the pass rate for Upper Intermediate starters was about 99% As you can see from the above statistics, with hard work and determination, it is possible for you to successfully complete the program in one year and enter Freshman. For those of you who are starting at the Upper-intermediate level, passing the course in the first semester will be very challenging. There is a lot to learn about English in an academic context, but it is certainly worthwhile as you can start some of the University Courses earlier. TEMEL, ORTA VE İLERİ DÜZEYDE İNGİLİZCE DERSLERİNİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ Temel, Orta ve İleri düzeyde İngilizce kurslarının ölçme ve değerlendirme yöntemleri ve ilkeleri açısından benzer özelliklere sahiptir. Ders notunuz hem ders içi çalışmalarınızın değerlendirilmesini, hem de sınav değerlendirmelerinizi içermekte ve aşağıdaki bölümlerden oluşmaktadır. İngilizce Dil Ölçme Sınavına girebilme hakkı elde edebilmeniz için ENG 003 -İleri Düzeyde İngilizce dersinden toplam notunuzun en az %70 olması gerekmektedir. Süreç içerisinde yazım (% 15) : Kayıtlı bulunduğunuz seviyenin eğitim süresine bağlı olarak, sizden bir ya da iki ayrı süreç içerisinde yazım ödevleri istenecektir. Her bir yazım ödeviniz için sizlerden birer yazım planı, daha sonra birinci taslak istenecek; bunlar üzerinde öğretim görevlilerinizden görüş aldıktan sonra yazım taslağınızda gerekli değişiklikleri yaparak iyileştirmeniz ve daha üst düzeye ulaşabilmeniz için sizlere yeterli zaman tanınacaktır. Orta ve ileri düzeylerde konu ve geçmişi hakkında bilgi edinebilmeniz için ayrıntılı olarak gerekli kaynakları tarayıp okumanız istenecektir. Sınıf içi yazım sınavları (% 15): Yazım sınavlarında seviyenize bağlı olarak kısa cevaplı sorulara yanıt vermeniz ve 250-350 kelimelik kompozisyon yazmanız istenecektir. Deneyiminiz arttıkça sizlerden daha uzun ve daha üst düzey kompozisyonlar yazmanız beklenecektir. Konuşma becerilerinin değerlendirilmesi (% 10) : Bir konuyu sözlü olarak tartışma becerileriniz ilk dönem içerisinde değerlendirilmektedir. Tartışmalar ve münazaralar da dahil olmak üzere grup halinde ya da ikili olarak yer alacağınız sözlü çalışmalarla değerlendirileceksiniz. İkinci dönemde ise bu çalışmalarınıza ek olarak, verilen konu üzerinde araştırma, irdeleme ve sözlü sunumlarda sonuçları aktarabilme becerilerinizle değerlendirileceksiniz. Dönem ortası ve dönem sonu sınavları (% 50) : Her bir seviyede 2 sınav olacaksınız: 1 arasınav ve 1 final sınavı. Bu sınavlar sizlerin okuma, dinleme ve dil kullanımı becerilerinizi ölçmektedir. Öğretim görevlisi kanaati (% 10) : Derslerde ve destek derslerindeki etkin katılımınız, derse devamınız ve ödevlerinizin niteliği dönem sonu notunuzun belirlenmesinde göz önüne alınmaktadır. Yukarıdaki bölümlerin değerlendirme ağırlıkları, seviyenize bağlı olarak değişiklik göstermektedir. Her dersin başlangıcında, ilgili öğretim görevlisi sizlere değerlendirme yöntemleri ve bunların tarihleri, ödev teslim tarihleri ve çalışmalarınızın değerlendirilmesinde kullanılan kriterler hakkında ayrıntılı bilgi verecektir. 16

İleri Düzeyde İngilizce seviyesinde başlayanlar için kursu birinci dönemin sonunda tamamlayarak birinci sınıfa geçmek oldukça zorlayıcı olabilecektir. TUR 001- COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN TURKISH FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS Foreign students will take TUR 001 Communication Skills in Turkish instead of TLL 001 Communication Skills in Turkish and a slightly different program will be followed depending on students needs. Communication Skills in Turkish is a non-credit, two-semester course for Foundation Development Year students, which aims at the improvement of students' academic thinking and writing skills through the mastery of Turkish. The main objectives are to display the interconnectedness of skills such as critical thinking, reading, writing, listening and speaking; to teach practical techniques for more effective use of these skills; to orientate students towards a critical and analytical use of the language through an efficient perception and practice of the multi-layered nature of academic work (research, prewriting preparations, drafting, revising and rewriting); and to help students comprehend academic communication as a process of collective learning through peer evaluation tasks. Students are expected to write several essays, prepare an oral presentation, carry out peer evaluation, and engage in some listening and reading comprehension tasks throughout the course. TLL 001 - TÜRKÇE İLETİŞİM BECERİLERİ TLL 001- Türkçe İletişim Becerileri dersi, bir sene boyunca İngilizce eğitimi alacak Temel Geliştirme Yılı öğrencileri için hazırlanmış, akademik yazma sürecine ağırlık veren bir düşünce ve iletişim becerileri geliştirme dersidir. TGY öğrencileri, Türkçe olarak yürütülen bu bir yıllık derste, akademik yazmanın ve düşünce geliştirmenin temellerini aldıktan sonra, araştırmaya ve kaynak kullanımına dayalı daha ileri yazma becerilerine yoğunlaşırlar. Bu ders bir atölye çalışması olarak planlanmıştır. Yani, lisede görülen derslerden farklı olarak, bu ders, konferans veren bir öğretmenden öğrencilere tek yönlü bir bilgi aktarımına ve bu bilgilerin sınavlarla ölçülmesine dayanmaz. TGY öğrencileri bu derste, Türkçe İletişim Becerileri başlıklı kitapta anlatılan bir yazma sisteminden yola çıkarak, arkadaşları ve öğretmenle ortaklaşa emek harcar ve yazma becerilerini geliştirmeye çalışırlar. Bu derste de ödevler, sorumluluklar ve harcanan emeği değerlendiren notlar bulunur ama bütün bunlar dersin odağını oluşturmaz. Bu dersin asıl odağı süreç olacaktır: Bu, sınıfta etkin bir biçimde tartışmalara katılarak, arkadaş grupları içinde çalışarak, sınıfta ve sınıf dışında yazılı işler hazırlayarak, bu işleri geliştirmek üzere yeniden yazarak ilerleyen bir süreçtir. Türkçe İletişim Becerileri dersi, yazma eylemini doğuştan gelen, Tanrı vergisi bir yetenek olarak değil, deneyimle ve emek harcanarak edinilen 18
bir beceri olarak değerlendirir. Bu noktadan yola çıkarak, derste özellikle üzerinde durulacak unsurlar şöyle sıralanabilir: 1. Yazarak anlatılacak bir şeylerimizin olduğunun bilincine varmak, kafamızın içinde yazılmayı bekleyen şeyleri keşfetme yollarını öğrenmek ve bu doğrultuda denemeler yapmak. 2. Profesyonel yazarların ve arkadaşlarımızın yazdıklarını okumanın, yazmanın olmazsa olmaz koşulu olduğunun farkına varmak ve daha bilinçli okumamıza yardım edecek teknikler üzerinde durmak. 3. Grup çalışmaları yoluyla ortaklaşa öğrenme eylemine girişmek, yapıcı eleştiriler getirerek ve alarak düşünme ve üretme kapasitelerimizi arttırmak. Sınıfı herkesin birbirini geçerek ipi göğüslemek için mücadele ettiği bir yarış olmaktan çıkarıp bireylerin birbirinden güç aldığı bir topluluk haline getirmeyi denemek. 4. Bir konuda bir yargıya ulaşma ve ulaştığımız bu yargıyı açıklama ya da savunma doğrultusunda ilerleyen bir yazı tekniğini öğrenmek ve uygulamak. 5. Yazılı ve sözlü sınavlar, ödevler ve projeler için verilen zaman sınırlarına uyarak, ele alınan konuyu bir defada kağıda dökme saplantısını terk etmek; yazılacak yazının adım adım, yapıp bozarak ve her defasında gelişerek ilerleyen bir sürecin ürünü olduğu bilincine ulaşmak. Türkçe İletişim Becerileri dersinde yazma sürecine yönelik bu sistematik yaklaşım; okuma, dinleme ve sözlü sunum etkinliklerine de uygulanacak; belirli bir konuda bir yargıyı ortaya koymayı ve bunu savunmayı amaçlayan yazılar ve konuşmalar üretme ve bu türden çalışmaları daha verimli bir biçimde algılayıp değerlendirme becerileri de geliştirilmeye çalışılacak. Bu süreci ve dolayısıyla dersi tamamlayan TGY öğrencileri çok önemli bir özellik kazanmış olacaklar: Korktukları, sıkıntı duydukları, istemeden ve zorla yaptıkları yazma eylemine daha istekli, düşünerek, ne yaptıklarını bilerek, kısacası daha bilinçli yaklaşmaya başlayacaklar. Bu sürecin sonunda yazmak bir altın bilezik haline gelecek: TGY ile başlayan üniversite yaşamında daha keyifli, başarılı, tatmin edici bir öğrenme süreci yaşamaya, hatta mezun olduktan sonra girilecek iş hayatında daha başarılı olmaya yardım edecek bir altın bilezik. 19
CIVIC INVOLVEMENT PROJECTS (CIP) Civic Involvement Projects (CIP) is a non-credit course designed to foster an awareness of the individual`s role in society by encouraging involvement in civic and community organizations. All students are required to participate in CIP during the first year of enrolment at Sabanc University. They work in teams of 5 to 10 students and projects are carried out without interfering with students' academic work during the week, evenings, and weekends and in the summer. The projects are assessed on a Satisfactory (S) Incomplete (I) basis by other students and project supervisors. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT EXAM (ELAE) When can I take the ELAE? The ELAE is administered four times a year; The School of Languages (SL) is responsible for ensuring that all students entering their Freshman year have the required level of English as well as the academic skills needed for success at SU. This is assessed through the SL s own English Language Assessment Exam (the ELAE), a proficiency exam with a predetermined standard of achievement. The ELAE is a test of English proficiency which tests your reading, listening and writing ability. Any student wishing to enter the degree courses must pass the ELAE. 1. in January (for students who successfully complete the Upper Intermediate course ENG 003 at the end of the Fall semester and the students who completed ENG 003 earlier but did not pass the ELAE), 2. at the end of the academic year in June (for students who successfully complete the Upper Intermediate course ENG 003 at the end of the Spring semester and the students who completed ENG 003 earlier but did not pass the ELAE), 3. prior to the beginning of the academic year in September (for newly admitted students and students who successfully complete the Upper Intermediate course ENG 003 at the end of the Summer Semester and the students who completed ENG 003 earlier but did not pass the ELAE) and 4. again at the end of September to those students who narrowly failed the earlier September exam. Which FDY students can take the ELAE? Only those students who successfully meet the passing requirements of the Upper Intermediate course (ENG 003) are eligible for the ELAE. No exceptional cases are considered. 21
Is there a make-up for the ELAE? No, there isn t. How are the ELAE Stage 2 results announced? The ELAE results are announced in terms of letter grades as follows: A-SL: 90-100 B-SL: 80-89 C-SL: 70-79 D-UL: 60-69 E-UL: 50-59 F-UL: 0-49 SL: Satisfactory in the ELAE UL: Unsatisfactory in the ELAE NA: Non attendance If I get a very high grade from the ELAE, can I be considered exempt from Freshman English courses? You can be exempt only from Freshman English I (ENG 101) provided that you meet the following conditions: 1. A grade from ELAE Stage II 2. A, A- or B+ grades in the Freshman English 101 Exemption Exam (FEEE 101) The Freshman English I (ENG 101) Exemption Exam (FEEE 101) is based on texts specified in a reading list which are given to students prior to the exam and include writing, a short presentation based on their written essay and a discussion of the texts used. There are no makeup exams for FEEE 101. In order to officially receive an exemption, after having received the necessary grades from the above exams, students need to write a petition to the Foundations Development Directorate. The purpose of this petition is the student s acceptance of the final ENG 101 grade based on the ELAE and FEEE 101 EXAM as detailed in the table below. Students who do not submit a petition are required to take ENG 101 in the first semester it is offered. 22

Can I take an international proficiency exam such as the TOEFL or the IELTS and use that score instead of taking the ELAE? No. The SL prepares the ELAE according to the needs of SU students and the expected standards of their particular program. There is a certain language standard we expect our students to achieve and the language teaching program in the SL is quite different from many other programs. This is why we run our specifically-designed exam, which suits the needs and expectations of our program. Can doing lots of exam practice for the ELAE help me pass? The ELAE is a language proficiency exam it is NOT like the ÖSS. The ELAE tests your language proficiency in reading, listening and writing; therefore, all you need to do in order to pass the ELAE is attend classes regularly and LEARN ENGLISH. You CANNOT do exam practice for language. Also, the types of language learning activities used in our teaching material reflect the question forms used in the ELAE. ELAE ye hazırlanmak için sınav alıştırması yapmak benim sınavda başarılı olmamı sağlar mı? ELAE dil kullanma yeterliğini ölçen bir sınavdır. ÖSS sınavı gibi değildir. ELAE okuma, dinleme ve yazma becerilerini ölçer, dolayısıyla bu sınavdan geçmek için derslere düzenli katılmak ve İNGİLİZCE Yİ ÖĞRENMEK gerekir. TURKISH LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT EXAM (TLAE) At the beginning of the academic year, in addition to the ELAE, newly registered foreign students are required to take the Turkish Language Assessment Exam (TLAE) which consists of an oral and a written component. Students who receive a Satisfactory grade in this exam take the TLL 001 course as part of their FDY instruction. Students who receive an Unsatisfactory grade in this exam take the TUR 001 course designed specifically to help students develop their Turkish language knowlegde and skills further and then retake the TLAE at the end of the Spring Term. TÜRKÇE DİL ÖLÇME SINAVI (TLAE) Yeni kayıt olan yabancı uyruklu öğrenciler, akademik yılın başında sunulan ELAE Sınavına ek olarak Türkçe Dil Ölçme Sınavını (TLAE) da almak zorundadırlar. Bu sınav, sözlü ve yazılı olmak üzere iki bölümden oluşur. Bu sınavdan Yeterli (S) not alan öğrenciler TGY eğitiminin bir parçası olarak TLL 001 dersini alırlar. Bu sınavdan Yetersiz (U) not alan öğrenciler ise Türkçe dil bilgisi ve becerilerini geliştirmeye yardımcı olmak için özel tasarlanmış TUR 001 dersini alırlar ve Bahar döneminin sonunda TLAE Sınavını yeniden alırlar. 27
SPRING FRESHMAN GENERAL INFORMATION 16 week Upper Intermediate students who successfully pass the mid-year ELAE with 70% or above are admitted to the University as Spring Freshman students during the Spring semester. This will give those of you who pass the opportunity to complete some of the core University courses, which are normally required of students in their Freshman year, during the second semester: Freshman English I & II - ENG 101 & 102 (6 credits, 6 hours/week. These courses are co-requisite i.e. should be taken together at the same time) You are also expected to continue: Communication Skills in Turkish - TLL 001 (Non-credit and 2 hours, continuing from Foundations Development Year - the first semester) or Communication Skills in Turkish for foreign students - TUR 001 (Non-credit and 2 hours, continuing from Foundations Development Year - the first semester) Civic Involvement Projects - CIP 101 (Non-credit, continuing from Foundations Development Year -the first semester) As well as the above courses, students will be given the option to take any of the following: NS 101 (4 credits / 4 hours + 2 lab & recitation hours = 6 hours) PROJ 102 (3 credits) MATH 101 (3 credits /3 hours + 2 recitation hours = 5 hours) (Students who pass the MATH 101 exemption exam can also take MATH 102 with the same credits and hours) SPS 102 (3 credits / 2 hours + 2 discussion hours) FRE 101, GER 101, ITA 101, JAP 101 or SPA 101 (3 credits / 3 hours) or depending on the results of the placement exam, other German, Spanish, French, Italian or Japanese courses available in the Spring semester (3 credits and 3 hours). (This affects the Grade Point Average (GPA) but does not count towards graduation requirements for FENS students.) TLL 302 (4 credits and 4 hours) ARA 301 (4 credits and 4 hours) Please note that the maximum number of credits that can be taken in a semester is 20. The recommended course load per semester is 5 credit courses which corresponds to 15-16 credits per semester. Please also note that there may be some changes in the courses offered to students. If this is the case, students will be informed by the FDP Directorate in due course. 28
