Muafiyet sınavına aşağıda belirtilen koşulları sağlayan öğrenciler katılabilir; a)eng 101, ENG 111, ENG 102, ENG 112, ING 101 ve ING 102 derslerinin muafiyet sınavlarına, başka bir üniversitenin önlisans, lisans programlarında benzer bir dersi almış, başarılı olmuş ancak ders içeriği uyuşmazlığından dolayı muafiyeti kabul edilmemiş olan öğrenciler girebilir. b) ENG 101 dersinin muafiyet sınavına, İEÜ, Yabancı Diller Yüksekokulu na bağlı Hazırlık programında yer alan Pre-Faculty Modülünü başarıyla tamamlamış olan öğrenciler, ING 101 ve ING 102 dersinin muafiyet sınavına ise İngilizce Hazırlık sınıfını başarı ile tamamlamış olan öğrenciler katılabilirler. c) Anadili İngilizce olan veya resmi dil olarak İngilizce'nin konuşulduğu bir ülkede, o ülke vatandaşlarının devam ettiği ortaöğretim kurumlarında öğrenimini tamamlayan öğrenciler, talep etmeleri ve belgelemeleri durumunda ENG 101, ENG 102, ING 101 ve ING 102 derslerinin muafiyet sınavlarına girebilirler. Muafiyet sınavlarına, bu dersi daha önce alıp başarısız olmuş olan öğrenciler giremez!.. Students, who meet the following requirements, can take the exemption exam; a) Students are allowed to take the exemption exams for ENG 101, ENG 111, ENG 102, ENG 112, ING 101, and ING 102, if they had taken a similar course at an undergraduate and associate program of a different university, got successful but was not exempt from the course due to mismatches of program content. b) Students, who successfully completed the Pre-Faculty Module of Preparatory program at IUE SFL, are allowed to take the exemption exam for ENG 101 course, and students, who successfully completed the English Preparatory Class, are allowed to take the exemption exam for ING 101 and ING 102 courses. c) Students, whose native language is English, or who completed their education at secondary education institutions at a country where the official spoken language is English and the citizens of that country also attend those institutions, may take the exemption exam for courses ENG 101, ENG 102, ING 101, and ING 102 if they demand and if they can certify it. The writing section includes APA style citation. The exam length is 110 minutes. Yazım bölümünde APA Kaynak Gösterme Biçimini de sorulacaktır. Sınav süresi 110 dakikadır. BEFORE YOUR PRESENTATION A. Preparing the visuals for your presentation: GUIDELINES FOR THE EXEMPTION EXAM SPEAKING PRESENTATION i. A computer will be provided for your use in the classroom of your presentation. Please bring your PowerPoint presentation on a USB flash memory. ii. iii. iv. Your PowerPoint presentation cannot contain more than a maximum of five slides. Three of the five slides must contain a visual image. Slides containing text may have a heading and no more than three bullet points which are not full sentences. Slides containing no visual image may contain no more than five bullet points which are not full sentences. Make sure that you have prepared your cue cards and visuals. A cue card/powerpoint slide should only have keywords and short phrases written on it. Do not write out the whole presentation! If you write sentences on your cue card/powerpoint slide, you will not be allowed to use them during your presentation. v. If you plan to use the board or bring external visuals, make sure that you have all the things you need; like magnets, board markers. B. Preparing yourself the presentation: i. Make sure that you are ready 10 minutes before your presentation time. You will be informed about your presentation date and time on the main page of the university website in advance of your presentation. If you miss your presentation time, you may lose your chance of giving your presentation. ii. iii. If you come early, please, wait outside the exam room silently. If you will be using cue cards during your presentation, show them to the teachers and submit a copy of your reference list. iv. Once you enter the classroom, you may only talk in English. v. Remember that this is a formal presentation. Please dress accordingly.

DURING THE PRESENTATION i. You must use (make reference) to a minimum of three sources. (One of them has to be a book/e-book/journal and one of the sources can be Turkish). Bring a reference list of your sources with you to your presentation. ii. The teachers will not ask any questions during your presentation. You be asked one question at the end of your presentation. If you do not understand the question that you are asked, you may ask your teachers to repeat/rephrase the question. iii. All presentations will be audio recorded by the teacher. AFTER THE PRESENTATION i. The result of your speaking presentation will be announced at the same time as your overall grade. Criteria for the Writing Task (40 pts) Task Achievement (10 pts) 10 Task has been fully understood and achieved by providing sufficient support. 8 Task has been understood and achieved; however insufficient support is provided. 6 Task has been partially achieved. 2 Task has not been achieved. Language Use (8 pts): 8 Efficient use of the language despite minor errors. Meaning is clear. 6 Adequate use of language with some errors. Meaning seldom obscured. 4 Major problems in language use. Meaning frequently obscured. 2 Dominated by errors. Does not communicate. Lexical Resource (6 pts): 6 The student uses an excellent range of relevant vocabulary/phrases. 4 The student uses a efficient range of relevant vocabulary/phrases. 2 The student uses an adequate range of relevant vocabulary/phrases.

1 The student uses a poor range of relevant vocabulary/phrases. Coherence (6 pts): 6 Writing follows a logical pattern, text staying on topic. 4 Slight deviations/irrelevancies in topic and flow. 2 Deviations/irrelevancies in topic make the flow of logical pattern sometimes obscured. 1 Lacks a logical pattern, with obvious problems in the transition of ideas, or major deviations from topic. Use of APA Citations 10pts (5pts for each different author cited) 5 All elements of the citation are correctly used. 4 Citation has one error. 3 Citation has two errors. 1 Citation attempted but not achieved. 0 No citation attempted. If the topic is not addressed, i.e. the writing is good but on a topic that is not asked for, Task Achievement cannot be more than 2 pts. If the writing task contains no evidence from only one reading text, Task Achievement cannot be more than 6pts. If the writing task contains no evidence from both reading texts, Task Achievement cannot be more than 2pts. If the student has written less than 150 words, Task Achievement cannot be more than 2pts. Plagiarism Case 1: Only one or two original sentences written by the student, the entire text is copied from the reading text= 0pts Plagiarism Case 2: A lot of text (a paragraph, or more than 3 sentences) have been taken from the reading text, no source stated, highlight it and grade the paper without considering this highlighted part. Take 10 pts from the final grade for plagiarism at the end. Then count the number of words, if it is less than the limit, task achievement cannot be more than 2pts. Plagiarism Case 3: Attempted to use a source but not paraphrased/quoted, grade the paper without considering this part and decide on your task achievement grade and assign one lower band for task achievement.

INFORMATION ON ENG 112 (ENGLISH FOR LAW II) EXEMPTION EXAM The English for Law I exemption exam consists of two main components: 1. Written (80%) 2. Lawyer Client Interview (20%) 1. Written exam There are two parts in the written exam: Part 1: Reading and Vocabulary*(Topics: Tort law, Criminal Law and Company Law) (75%) Part 2: Writing** (Letter threatening legal action)(25%) * Vocabulary for these topics is taken from Units 3, 4 and 5 of the course book Introduction to International Legal English by Cambridge. ** The writing sample for Letter threatening legal action can be found in Unit 3 of the course book Introduction to International Legal English by Cambridge. 2. Lawyer Client Interview Students are expected to conduct a role-play between the lawyer and the client using the WASP technique. The necessary information on this technique can be found on page 35 of the course book Introduction to International Legal English by Cambridge.
